Brewers' Bush baffles Phillies in no-hit bid

Brewers' Bush baffles Phillies in no-hit bid
Both teams' players, coaches and fans held their breath for most of Thursday afternoon's game.

The Phillies could do nothing but hope ace Cole Hamels wasn't seriously hurt in the fourth inning after getting hit on the back of his left shoulder with a line drive.

Milwaukee wanted nothing more than for Dave Bush to record the club's first no-hitter since 1987.

One team got their wish.

Hamels suffered only a bruise from the line shot Prince Fielder hit and said he expects to make his next start. Hamels struck out six in the first three innings but left the game after being struck by the line drive.

Bush didn't get the no-no, though he was oh-so-close; he lost it in the eighth inning. But he did get the next-best thing -- a 6-1 win and a series victory for the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.

Thursday's outing marked the third time Bush, a Conestoga High graduate, lost a no-hitter late.

quot;You just have to enjoy it while it's happening,quot; he said. quot;It's more fun than getting your butt beat in.quot;

Bush had plenty to enjoy. The Phillies didn't hit a ball to the outfield until the third inning, didn't have a runner reach second base until Matt Stairs broke up the no-hitter with a solo homer in the eighth and went down in order three times.

quot;I didn't like the way we hit; I didn't like the way we swung the bats,quot; Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. quot;I felt like our at-bats could have been better. We were kind of defensive. We didn't get many good swings.

quot;But the guy had a no-hitter going. I don't take anything away from him because he had a heckuva game. That right there had something to do with it. How much? I don't know.quot;

Through seven innings, Bush had walked three and hit two batters, but he didn't encounter a scare until Greg Dobbs pinch hit to lead off the eighth. The lefty laced a hard grounder down the third-base line, but Bill Hall made a back-handed grab and fired a throw from the line to Fielder, who made a quick scoop to get Dobbs.

quot;Off the bat, I thought it was going to be a hit,quot; Bush said. quot;I saw it squirt by the bag and thought, quot;There was no way he was going to get it.' That was an outstanding play.quot;

Bush wasn't so lucky with the next batter he faced.

Just five outs away from throwing the first no-hitter against the Phillies since 1978, Stairs hit Bush's 3-1 offering off the foul pole in right field, giving him his 16th career pinch-hit home run and second of the year.

Stairs insisted he didn't alter his approach.

quot;My approach won't change from now until I'm 50, if I'm playing till then,quot; he said. quot;Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I think you have to be aggressive. [There's] no difference between pinch-hitting with a no-no or pinch-hitting with the bases loaded. Maybe that's why I've had success. I don't think about it too much. I don't overdo it in the batting cage. I take four or five swings and then I let the adrenaline go when I'm on deck.quot;

Stairs said he has always been impressed with Bush.

quot;Offspeed, he throws everything for strikes,quot; Stairs said. quot;If he needed to throw a curveball, he laid it in there at different speeds ? 68-74 [mph]. A guy like that is hard [to hit] because you can't look in one area because he goes in and out so well. He hits the inside corner then the outside and he stands you up and he throws you the dead fish away. I've seem him pitch a lot and I've never really seen the team I play for hit him well.quot;

Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer off Hamels in the fourth and Hall added a solo shot in the eighth.

Fielder had a three-run double in the fifth.
