Mackanin, 57, spent the last year as a pro scout for the New York Yankees, but he had been the Cincinnati Reds' manager for the final three months of the 2007 season. He also was the interim manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005.

Mackanin played nine seasons in the majors, from 1973 to 1981, including 18 games for the Phillies in 1978-79.

The Phillies also interviewed Rich Donnelly and Tim Bogar for the job.

Williams, who had been the bench coach since 2007, had been invited back but chose not to return.

Mackanin joins recently hired third-base coach Sam Perlozzo, who replaced Steve Smith. Interestingly, Mackanin interviewed for the third-base coach's job two years ago when Manuel hired Smith. The Phillies fired Smith earlier this month.

Pitching coach Rich Dubee, hitting coach Milt Thompson, first-base coach Davey Lopes, and recently promoted bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer return to the coaching staff. Billmeyer replaced Ramon Henderson, who left the team midseason for personal reasons.
