Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Jimmy Rollins will meet the Phillies in San Francisco on Friday.
But will he be in the starting lineup? "If he's ready to play, I'd say that there's a good chance he will be," manager Charlie Manuel said. "I'll go by what he tells me. I'll wait and see how he feels. But at the same time, I kind of expect him to tell me he's ready to play."
Rollins, the Phillies' MVP shortstop, hopped a flight Thursday to San Francisco, where he'll meet the team. He's expected to work out for trainer Scott Sheridan, and if his sprained ankle responds well, he'll be activated from the disabled list before Friday night's series opener against the Giants.
The Phillies have gone 16-12 since Rollins got injured April 8. Since he went on the disabled list April 20, they're 12-6.
In Rollins' absence, fill-in shortstop Eric Bruntlett has started 28 consecutive games and batted .245, including .311 (19-for-61) in the past 16 games. Even after Rollins returns, Manuel vowed he won't forget about Bruntlett, who can play multiple infield positions.
"We got tremendous play out of Bruntlett," he said. "I'm definitely going to put him in the game somewhere. He definitely showed me he can handle the bat."
Rollins played in back-to-back extended spring training games this week before playing for Class A Clearwater (Fla.) on Wednesday night. In 12 games (eight starts) this season, Rollins is batting .308 (12-for-39) with two home runs and six RBIs.
DIAMONDBACKS 8, PHILLIES 3: Brett Myers allowed back-to-back walks to open a four-run fourth inning, and Philadelphia lost the series finale at Arizona. Myers, who has had only three quality starts in eight outings, is 2-3 with a 5.33 ERA. The Phillies mustered only six hits against Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb, who earned a complete-game victory and became the first NL pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 1997 to win his first eight starts. Shane Victorino and Eric Bruntlett had two hits apiece for the Phillies.
