Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Park Chan-ho provided a strong performance in his final spring training campaign, but the 15-year veteran still has to wait to hear what he wants: No. 5 pitcher. The right-hander Park, 35, gave up two runs - one earned - and six hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Houston Astros to earn his second triumph in the Grapefruit League, Tuesday (Seoul Time), as the defending World Series champion won 13-3 in Clearwater, Fla. He struck out seven and walked one.
it is the second straight seven-strikeout performance. He whiffed seven times against the Toronto Blue Jays last week.
During his five outings, including four starts, Park yielded six earned runs and 20 hits over 21 1/3 innings with a 2.53 ERA, while fanning 25 and walking just two.
Park, who spent most of last season in the bullpen with the Los Angeles Dodgers, signed with Philadelphia in December to have a shot at the fifth starter in the Phillies' rotation.
"I'm expecting their decision to make me as the starter. That's my goal. That's why I signed with this team," said Park, who is 117-92 with a 4.34 ERA in the U.S. big leagues.
Despite those impressive numbers, the Phillies have yet to decide with whom they will go in the fifth slot because another contender, J.A. Happ, also has been performing well.
The left-hander, who is 1-1 in his two-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB), appeared in six games, including three starts, and posted a 3.15 ERA - seven earned on 18 hits in 20 innings - with 14 strikeouts and six walks.
"We haven't made our minds up yet," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
"We're still talking," added Rich Dubee, the pitching coach.
Depending on the 26-year-old's final bid on Friday, the Phillies are likely to pin their No. 5 pitcher on the rotation, comprised of Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Joe Blanton and Jamie Moyer.
