Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Cole Hamels, as expected, will start Game 1 of the NL Division Series.
After that, the Phillies rotation is unsettled. Manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee haven't decided if left-hander Jamie Moyer or right-hander Brett Myers will start Game 2 on Thursday against the wild-card-winning Brewers. Myers has yielded 16 runs in 8 1/3 innings over his last two starts, but his ERA is better at home (3.01) than on the road (6.21).
Going with Hamels in the opener was a no-brainer.
Hamels, the Phillies' ace lefty, was able to rest Sunday after the Phillies clinched the National League East title on Saturday night. Hamels went 14-10 with a 3.09 ERA in 33 starts and logged 227 1/3 innings, second most in the NL behind Mets ace Johan Santana.
It will be Hamels' second career playoff start. He allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings during the NLDS opener last season against the Rockies.
Hamels politely declined Sunday to discuss his Game 1 start, deferring comments until his Tuesday press conference. But in the euphoria after Saturday night's clincher, he said he has learned from the 45-year-old Moyer to control his emotions during pressure-filled starts.
"He has gone through his entire career without maybe the highest talent level, but he always has the mind-set," Hamels said. "That's what's gotten him through, especially in pressure situations. That's something I have to learn, and I think I have learned."
PHILLIES 8, NATIONALS 3: Lou Marson, the Phillies' top catching prospect, collected his first major league hit and home run Sunday as the Phillies wrapped up a victory in the regular-season finale. The Phillies, who clinched the NL East title Saturday night, started a lineup that didn't include any regulars. With the victory, manager Charlie Manuel set a career-high for victories in a season with 92. Manuel won 91 games with the Indians in 2001. The Phillies finished with a 92-70 record, their best since 1993. They will open the best-of-five NL Division Series on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park against the wild-card-winning Brewers.
