Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Brett Myers surrendered two runs on two hits in seven innings Thursday night in Game 2 of the National League Division Series.
But, years from now, when folks discuss Myers' first career playoff start, they'll remember his at-bats. With two outs, a runner on third base and the score tied 1-1 in the second inning, Myers fouled off three typically nasty CC Sabathia fastballs and worked a nine-pitch walk, sending the largest crowd in the five-year history of Citizens Bank Park into a frenzy. After Jimmy Rollins walked on four pitches, Shane Victorino drove a two-strike cutter into the left field seats for a 5-1 lead.
Then, in the fourth inning, Myers lined out to center field, but only after making Sabathia throw 10 more pitches.
Brewers third baseman Craig Counsell said Myers' at-bats were the best he has seen anyone have against Sabathia all season.
"I know I'm a terrible hitter," said Myers, a .116 career hitter. "I really can't explain it. I know I'm a terrible hitter. It was one of those freakish things that I was able to lay off some good pitches and able to extend the pitch count."
Said Sabathia, who entered with a 7.17 ERA in four career playoff starts, "This game was about me not finishing. It was me not being able to make the pitches when I needed to. This is where I need to be, coming out here and pitching a big game. I didn't do that."
Making his fourth consecutive start on three days' rest, Sabathia lasted only 3 2/3 innings and threw 98 pitches (only 55 strikes). The Phillies' strategy was to hike his pitch count.
"Our goal was to get his pitch count up," Victorino said. "And the guy to my left, Myers, battled his pitch count in regards to 19 pitches or something like that for the pitcher. That was great."
PHILLIES 5, BREWERS 2: Shane Victorino hit a grand slam in the second inning, and Brett Myers tossed seven solid innings to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five NL Division Series. Since Division Series play began in 1995, only four teams have overcome 2-0 deficits to win the series. Myers, making his first career postseason start, allowed two runs on two hits and three walks and struck out four. Victorino had three hits, while Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth each had two hits. The Phillies had six doubles, matching a franchise record for a playoff game. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are a combined 1-for-12 in the series.
