Brett Myers' confounding struggles continued Friday night, prompting manager Charlie Manuel to wonder how much longer the Phillies can keep Myers in their rotation.

Myers, the Phillies' two-time Opening Day starter, was KO'd before he could record an out in the third inning of an 8-7 loss at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The heavy-hitting Rangers tagged Myers for five runs on five hits and four walks.

In 17 starts, Myers is 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA that ranks 95th among the 100 major league starters who qualify for the ERA title. He also has allowed a majors-leading 24 home runs.

Most telling, though, is the Phillies' 4-13 record in his starts. They are 1-11 in Myers' last 12 starts.

"First, you have to get somebody to do the job," Manuel said. "When things go bad, those are things we discuss. I told you a few outings ago, we'd try to get him right and go from there."

Myers, who spent most of last season as the Phillies' closer, was moved back to the rotation in the offseason after they traded for Brad Lidge. The Phillies believed Myers was a better starter than any they could acquire on the free agent market.

The Phillies have few internal options to replace Myers in the rotation. Still-rehabbing right-hander Kris Benson will make his first start in Class AAA on Sunday, but he remains several starts from being ready to return to the majors after shoulder surgery in March 2007.

RANGERS 8, PHILLIES 7: Pedro Feliz belted a grand slam, one of three home runs hit by the slumping Phillies. But in the first game in franchise history in Arlington, the Phils dropped the series opener Friday night. Brett Myers couldn't survive the third inning, and reliever Clay Condrey was unable to hold a lead. Chris Coste and Jayson Werth slugged homers for the Phillies, who exceeded their run total from the previous three games in Oakland. Werth, batting in the leadoff spot for the second time in three games, had two hits. Pat Burrell reached base in three of his five plate appearances.
