During spring training, manager Charlie Manuel said Tom Gordon was the key to the Phillies' bullpen.

Now, it appears Gordon may be out for the season.

Gordon, the Phillies' 40-year-old setup man, will see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday for a second opinion on an injured right elbow that may require "Tommy John" surgery. An MRI exam Monday in Philadelphia revealed that Gordon has damage to his ulnar collateral ligament. Gordon has been on the disabled list since July 6 with right elbow inflammation and pulled himself from a rehab assignment Wednesday night at Class A Clearwater.

"Right now, we aren't optimistic that he will (pitch this season)," Phillies athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said. "We would really like to have Lew's opinion because he's familiar with Tom."

Yocum performed elbow ligament replacement ("Tommy John") surgery on Gordon in 1999.

Gordon is 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA in 34 appearances for the Phillies this season. In his absence, Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson have been the Phillies' primary late-inning right-handers. J.C. Romero has been handling the late innings from the left side.

In his 20-year career, Gordon is 138-125 with 158 saves. He is in the final year of a three-year, $18 million contract with the Phillies.

If Gordon requires "Tommy John surgery", the typical recovery time is 12 months.

PIRATES 2, PHILLIES 0 (12 innings): Joe Blanton allowed one hit in seven innings but didn't get the decision Friday in the Phillies' 12-inning loss to the Pirates in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies were shut out for the second straight game, marking their first back-to-back blankings since Sept. 11-12, 1999. They haven't scored a run in 23 innings, their longest streak of being shut out since Sept. 1-3, 2000. The Phillies mustered only six hits and left 12 runners on base. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino had two hits apiece. Chase Utley's hitting streak ended at 12 games.
