Philadelphia Phillies Inside Pitch 2008-08-26

Philadelphia Phillies Inside Pitch 2008-08-26
Jimmy Rollins already had driven in two runs, scored a third and picked up more hits (three) in six innings than he had in his previous six games (two). So, as he slid into third base with a two-out triple Monday night, something unusual happened at Citizens Bank Park.

Rollins heard applause.

Booed during the last week for both his controversial "front-runner" remarks about Phillies fans and his 4-for-48 slump, Rollins laced a two-run single to left field in the second inning to give the Phillies an early lead. He also singled to right field and scored in the fifth before his sixth-inning triple.

It was the first multi-hit game in two weeks for Rollins, who declined to talk to reporters.

"If he gets on base, we usually win," pitcher Brett Myers said. "He makes things happen. Without having him on base a couple of games, it's kind of a strain. He's gotten hits this year, but they just haven't come in bunches. You kind of expect him to get big hits, the way he played last year. That's what makes us win."

The Phillies are 32-11 this season when Rollins scores at least one run. Problem is, he isn't scoring as much as he usually does. Entering Monday night, Rollins had gone 2-for-25 in the previous six games, dropping his average to .255.

"He was patient, and he got some fastballs," manager Charlie Manuel said. "Look, Rollins is going to hit. He's got a good approach at the plate and a short swing. He's going to hit."

And about those cheers?

"Fans have always liked Rollins," Manuel said. "You win, they'll forgive."

PHILLIES 5, DODGERS 0: Brett Myers flirted with danger but threw seven shutout innings as the Phillies completed their first four-game sweep of the Dodgers since Aug. 29-Sept. 1, 1985, in Los Angeles. It was the first time the Phillies had swept four games from the Dodgers in Philadelphia. Two weeks ago, the Phillies were swept in a four-game series at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 1962. The Phillies allowed 13 hits and 16 runners, but the Dodgers went 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14. Jimmy Rollins recorded three hits and two RBIs, while Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz had two hits apiece. The Phillies remained a half-game behind the division-leading Mets, who visit Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night for the start of a two-game series.
