Philadelphia Phillies Inside Pitch 2008-08-27
The Phillies and Mets, bitter rivals only by geography until last season, have played several memorable games over the past two years. Most have featured unexpected Phillies rallies.

There was the Phillies' near-miss, 10-9 loss after they trailed 10-1 on July 7. There was the three-run, 10th-inning rally after Pat Burrell's game-tying homer in the ninth last June 7 at Shea Stadium. And, of course, there was the back-and-forth, instant-classic 11-10 Phillies victory last Aug. 30.

Add this one to the list.

Trailing 7-0 in the fourth inning Tuesday, the Phillies rallied for eight unanswered runs. The final run came in the 13th inning when catcher Chris Coste, who didn't enter the game until the eighth, notched his fourth hit, an RBI single with the bases loaded.

"I don't ever recall getting not only four opportunities but four hits when you come in in the eighth inning," Coste said. "I told (first base coach) Davey Lopes, I never had a walk-off hit in my career, not even in the minor leagues."

So, what gives the Phillies so much fortitude against the Mets?

"The other team gives you some inspiration, let's put it that way," suddenly sizzling shortstop Jimmy Rollins said cryptically. "You're able to take that and keep yourself motivated."

Did the Mets, accused previously by the Phillies of over-the-top celebrations, get too excited after taking their big lead? Was it something they said? Something they did?

Care to elaborate, Jimmy?

"No, just watch 'em," Rollins said. "If you were a player and you're looking over in that other dugout, you'll feel a certain type of way. Rewind the game. Just watch the game."

PHILLIES 8, METS 7 (13 innings): Chris Coste singled with the bases loaded in the 13th inning and the Phillies completed an improbable comeback from a seven-run deficit to defeat the Mets in the opener of a two-game series. The victory, which took more than five hours to complete, put the Phillies back in first place, a half-game ahead of the Mets. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard both belted two-run homers in a four-run fifth inning to start the Phillies' comeback. Eric Bruntlett's two-out RBI double in the ninth inning tied the game. Coste went 4-for-4 despite not entering the game until the eighth inning. Other oddities: Pat Burrell went 0-for-7 with four strikeouts; Carlos Ruiz played third base in the ninth inning; and reliever Clay Condrey notched his first extra-base hit, a broken-bat double in the fifth.
