Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Whenever ageless left-hander Jamie Moyer starts for the Phillies, first baseman Ryan Howard sees the same look -- and hears the same reaction -- from opposing hitters.
"Guys get on first base, and it's like, 'Man, how does he do it?'" Howard said. "I'm just like, 'Hey man, hang with it.'" Moyer, like the Energizer rabbit, just keeps going. Even on short rest.
Moyer, the oldest pitcher in the majors at 45, started on three days of rest Thursday night and cruised through five innings before permitting a two-run homer to Prince Fielder on his 88th and last pitch in the sixth. With a fastball that barely cracks 80 mph, he earned his team-leading 14th victory in a had-to-have-it 6-3 win over the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.
"It just goes to show you," manager Charlie Manuel said, "old men can still pitch."
Moyer admitted he began tiring in the sixth, and after making his first start on short rest since July 6, 2004, he cautioned that he may not feel the effects until later this month.
"Sometimes, it's not your next start but two starts later that it can creep up and bite you," said Moyer, who figured to have at least four days of rest before his next start. "Right now, I don't see it as a problem."
Hitters, then, will just go on shaking their heads.
"People have asked me all year long, 'How does he do it?'" center fielder Shane Victorino said. "It's gotten to the point where I'm speechless. It's not like he's throwing it by guys. He just knows how to get guys out."
PHILLIES 6, BREWERS 3: Ryan Howard homered and collected three RBIs to lift the Phillies to a win in the opener of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies moved to within three games of the wild-card-leading Brewers and shaved the idle Mets' lead to 2 1/2 games in the NL East. Jimmy Rollins, Howard and Pedro Feliz had two hits each for the Phillies. LHP Jamie Moyer, pitching on three days of rest, allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Ryan Madson, Scott Eyre, Chad Durbin and Brad Lidge combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Lidge improved to 36-for-36 in save opportunities.
