Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Brett Myers, like Jamie Moyer before him, will pitch Sunday on short rest.
Not even Friday night's rainout will change that. Even though Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee preferred to schedule the makeup game against the Brewers for Monday, a mutual day off for the teams, Phillies and Brewers players voted to play a split-admission, day-night doubleheader Sunday. The opener will start at 1:35 p.m. EDT, with the second game following at 7:35 p.m.
"I talked to the players, and we would rather play a doubleheader," said shortstop Jimmy Rollins, the Phillies' player representative. "We've done it before. It's a day-night, so it's not like you're going out there right after one game. We'll get it in and preserve the off-day."
Even if the Phillies' players voted to play Monday, Rollins said the Brewers had a right to veto that decision. The Brewers haven't had a day off since Aug. 29. If they had lost Monday, they would've played on 24 consecutive days, and the players' association must approve of a team playing on more than 20 straight days.
Manuel was unmoved.
"I don't like doubleheaders," he said. "It's tough to win a doubleheader. It's also better for our pitching if we play straight through. Everything falls better that way."
Nevertheless, ace lefty Cole Hamels (12-9, 3.12 ERA) will start for the Phillies on Saturday against Brewers lefty Manny Parra (10-7, 4.09). Right-hander Joe Blanton (2-0, 4.61) will start one game Sunday, likely the matinee opener, and Myers (9-11, 4.22) will start the other. The Brewers will use right-handers Dave Bush (9-10, 4.23) and Jeff Suppan (10-8, 4.63) Sunday.
BREWERS at PHILLIES, PPD: Friday's game was postponed by rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday.
