Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-09-29
--CF Shane Victorino, who bruised his right shin in the eighth inning Saturday, limped through the clubhouse Sunday but said he intends to be ready to play in Game 1 of the playoffs. Athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said X-rays on Victorino's shin were negative. The injury could've been worse. As he collided in shallow center field with backpedaling SS Jimmy Rollins, Victorino was spiked in the left leg. But, because of the wet weather, Rollins was wearing plastic spikes, sparing Victorino a serious gash.

--C Lou Marson, the Phillies' top prospect, made a memorable major league debut in Sunday's 8-3 victory over the Nationals. Marson collected his first career hit (a two-out single in the fourth inning) and his first home run (a two-run shot in the eighth against reliever Marco Estrada). His teammates jokingly ignored him when he returned to the dugout after the homer, and Marson responded by giving fake high-fives. "He's going to be a good big-league player," manager Charlie Manuel said. Maybe even by next season. Marson figures to challenge incumbent catchers Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste during spring training. "I don't know what else I have to do," said Marson, who batted .314 at Class AA Reading. "I don't know what the brass is thinking or anything. The biggest thing for me is I've got to stay healthy."

--RHP Kyle Kendrick allowed three runs in four innings in his final start of the season Sunday. Kendrick, an 11-game winner who struggled after the All-Star break and fumbled his spot in the rotation, will refine his changeup in instructional-league games rather than stay with the Phils in the playoffs. "Nobody wants to be in this position," said Kendrick, who had a 5.49 ERA in 31 games (30 starts). "But I understand the move. I have to do what's best for the team. It's out of my hands." Kendrick had an 11.35 ERA in six starts entering Sunday.

--LHP Les Walrond struck out four in two scoreless innings and earned his first major league win. Walrond, 31, has made 23 career major league appearances, including two starts. In two call-ups to the Phillies this season, he went 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA in six relief appearances.

--OF So Taguchi made his 12th start of the season -- his first since June 1 -- Sunday and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Taguchi is angling for a spot on the Phillies' playoff roster. Taguchi was used sparingly during the season. He got only 91 at-bats in 88 games and batted .220 with nine RBIs.

BY THE NUMBERS: 92 -- Victories for the Phillies in 2008, their highest total since 1993.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're going to match up fine as long as we don't see CC (Sabathia) every turn." -- Manager Charlie Manuel looking toward the NLDS and the Brewers' ace hurler.
