Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-10-17
--LHP Cole Hamels won the NLCS MVP award after winning Game 5 Wednesday night. But the award may have been secured in the seventh inning when, after issuing back-to-back two-out walks, he struck out Jeff Kent. Before the strikeout, manager Charlie Manuel visited the mound and decided to stick with Hamels. "He just wanted to know what I was still able to do," said Hamels, who threw 99 pitches before Kent's at-bat. "With the type of personality he has, you just have to laugh sometimes. He just brings the excitement and fun to the game because the game is supposed to be fun." In two starts in the NLCS, Hamels allowed three runs in 14 innings.

--RF Geoff Jenkins was sound asleep at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday morning when his wife tapped him on the shoulder. "It's go-time," she said. More than three weeks before her expected due date, Jennifer Jenkins was ready to give birth to the couple's second child. So, Geoff, a reserve outfielder, bolted downstairs to the hotel concierge and got directions to nearby Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. At 12:59 p.m., almost 4-1/2 hours before the first pitch of Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, Justyce Tyler Jenkins -- a 7-pound, 4-ounce baby boy -- was born. "That wasn't on our radar," the proud father said before taking batting practice. "I told my wife I was going to spray her with champagne. Maybe we'll have two miracles in one day."

--RHP Brett Myers loved being a closer so much last season that he likened it to being a "rock star." So, when the Phils sent him to the bullpen during the ninth inning Monday night as a backup for closer Brad Lidge, Myers was ready. "I think they called early just so that I'd have more time since I've been starting all year," Myers said. "But I didn't need much time, believe me, especially when the adrenaline starts going. I don't think I would be in there to close a game. But I felt like I had split personalities, going back to the bullpen. I felt like I was back closing again. It was easy to get loose."

BY THE NUMBERS: 6 -- World Series appearances for the Phillies in their 126-year history (1915, 1950, 1980, 1983, 1993, 2008).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Any time you win, it's fantastic. But to be able to give my father's trophy to the guy I groomed to take my job was very special." --Phillies chairman and honorary NL president Bill Giles.
