Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30
--RHP Gary Majewski has agreed to a minor league contract with the Phillies and will attempt to win a spot in the bullpen during spring training. Majewski, 28, registered a 6.53 ERA in 40 innings with the Cincinnati Reds last season and has a 4.61 career ERA. The Phillies' bullpen had an NL-best 3.22 ERA last season and includes six holdovers ?- closer Brad Lidge, setup man Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero, Chad Durbin, Scott Eyre and Clay Condrey.

--1B Ryan Howard and LHP Cole Hamels are among the Phillies' eight arbitration-eligible players, but it's unlikely that either will receive a multi-year contract extension before the 2009 season begins. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said the club will consider long-term deals for Howard and Hamels, but likely not this offseason. If any Phillies player receives a multi-year contract, it likely will be RF Jayson Werth, who will be eligible for free agency after the 2009 season. Howard won a $10 million award in an arbitration hearing against the Phillies last February and is expected to receive another sizable raise after leading the majors with 48 home runs and 146 RBIs last season. Hamels, who made $500,000 in 2008, also is due for a big raise after being named MVP of both the NLCS and World Series. Hamels is arbitration eligible for the first time. Howard can't become a free agent until after the 2011 season. Hamels is under the Phillies' control through 2012.

--RHP Brad Lidge didn't blow a save last season, going 41-for-41 during the regular season and 7-for-7 in the playoffs. And after receiving one first-place vote in the NL MVP balloting, Lidge was named 2008 Closer of the Year in's annual This Year in Baseball Awards. Lidge earned 44 percent of the vote, overtaking New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera (22.7 percent). Phillies manager Charlie Manuel won the TYIB Manager of the Year award, while erstwhile GM Pat Gillick was named Executive of the Year.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7 -- Home victories for the Phillies during the 2008 postseason. The Phillies went 7-0 at home. Since 1995, only the Phillies and the 1999 New York Yankees went undefeated at home in the playoffs and won the World Series.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "A lot of people told me they never watched baseball before. But knowing a kid from Hawaii was in the World Series, they had to watch." -- Phillies CF Shane Victorino on the reaction of people in his native Hawaii when he returned home as a World Series champion.
