Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-05-30
--OF Jayson Werth is progressing from his right oblique strain, and manager Charlie Manuel said he should be ready to begin hitting off a tee within the next few days. Werth, who was injured during a swing May 23 in Houston and was placed on the disabled list one day later, is expected to be ready to return late next week, once he's eligible to be activated. Werth is batting .260 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in only 131 at-bats.

--RHP Kris Benson will make his first official minor league start Monday for Class A Clearwater. Benson, who is trying to return from rotator cuff surgery in March 2007, is expected to throw 75 pitches. Benson threw 75 pitches Tuesday in an extended spring training game in Clearwater, Fla. He signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in February but was slowed by biceps tendinitis in spring training and a strained groin last month.

--CF Shane Victorino will open the three-game series against the Marlins with a 10-game hitting streak. During the hot streak, he is batting .442 (19-for-43) with 13 runs and six stolen bases. In 28 games since coming off the disabled list, Victorino is batting .315 (35-for-111) with 25 runs and 11 stolen bases. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said the key to Victorino's success is more patience at the plate. "If he's a patient hitter and he works the count, he can get fastballs to hit," Manuel said. "And he's a good fastball hitter."

--2B Chase Utley hit his majors-leading 17th home run Wednesday night, putting him on pace to hit 50 homers this season. That would shatter the record for homers by a second baseman. Rogers Hornsby hit 42 homers in 1922, and Davey Johnson tied that mark in 1973. Utley's career high for homers is 32 in 2006. He hit 22 homers last season, when he missed one month with a broken wrist. "He does everything for us," manager Charlie Manuel said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 21 -- One-run games for the Phillies through their first 52 games this season. That ranked second among NL teams behind only the Giants (22). The Phillies were 10-11 in those games.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think the fact I'm not as concerned with the fans probably helped me a little. There was a time when I was concerned what the Houston fans thought -- but not anymore." -- Phillies closer Brad Lidge, on the mixed reaction he received from Astros fans upon his return to Houston last week.
