Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Ryan Madson and the Phillies have agreed to a three-year, $12 million deal, according to multiple media reports. Madson, who had been eligible for arbitration, was a key reliever for the Phillies in their World Series run last year, posting a 2.13 ERA in 11 playoff games.
--INF Tadahito Iguchi, released by the Phillies after the season, will soon sign a three-year deal with the Chibe Lotte Marines in his native Japan, according to Kyodo News. In four seasons in United States, Iguchi was part of World Series championship teams in 2005 (White Sox) and 2008 (Phillies), although he didn't play in the series last year. He hit a combined .232 for San Diego and Philadelphia in '08. --LHP Cole Hamels, fresh off winning the MVP award in the NL Championship Series and World Series, agreed to a three-year, $20.5 million deal with the Phillies. Hamels had been eligible for arbitration. INF/OF Greg Dobbs also avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $2.5 million deal.
--RHP Chan Ho Park so badly wants to win the No. 5 spot in the Phillies' starting rotation that he has passed up a chance to pitch for his native South Korea in the World Baseball Classic. Park, 35, held an emotional press conference in Seoul last week during which he said he prefers to stay in the Phillies' spring training camp to maximize his starts in Grapefruit League games. "I'm very sorry to my fans and the people who wanted me to play in the WBC," Park said before briefly breaking into tears. "I won't be playing for the national team anymore. As I'm going to the Phillies, I will do my best there to achieve my goal of being a starter."
Park is expected to compete against LHP J.A. Happ, RHP Kyle Kendrick and top RHP prospect Carlos Carrasco for the final spot in the Phillies rotation.
Park revived his career last season as primarily a reliever with the Los Angeles Dodgers, posting a 3.40 ERA in 54 appearances (five starts). In 2006, he pitched 10 scoreless innings, earned three saves and helped South Korea reach the semifinals of the inaugural World Baseball Classic.
Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins will play for the United States in the WBC in March, but 1B Ryan Howard, LHP Cole Hamels and RH closer Brad Lidge declined invitations to play, preferring to remain in the Phillies' camp to prepare for the season. C Carlos Ruiz (Panama) and OF Matt Stairs (Canada) are expected to play for their countries.
--INF Pablo Ozuna has agreed to a minor league contract with the Phillies and will come to spring training as a non-roster invitee. Ozuna, 34, could provide the Phillies with more infield depth in case 2B Chase Utley is unable to start the season on time after undergoing right hip surgery in November. Earlier this month, the Phillies also signed veteran INF Marcus Giles to a minor league contract with a spring training invite. Ozuna batted .260 with one homer and nine RBIs in 68 games between the White Sox and the Dodgers last season. He has been a utility infielder throughout his career, batting .282 in 309 games with the Marlins (2000, 2002), Rockies (2003), White Sox (2005-08) and Dodgers (2008). He got a career-high 203 at-bats for the White Sox in 2005 and batted a career-high .328 in 2006. Ozuna will join incumbent utility man Eric Bruntlett, Giles and top prospect Jason Donald in providing second base options if Utley isn't ready to play in April.
--SS Jimmy Rollins grew up in Oakland and idolized Rickey Henderson, so Henderson's election to the Hall of Fame last week meant a lot to the Phillies star.
"He helped change the game," Rollins told the Philadelphia Daily News. "He was the whole entertainment package. He was not just a ballplayer. He was the kind of player you'd pay to watch. I liked to get to the games early to watch him. That was the best part.
"Don't get me wrong, the game was great, too. But my favorite part was to watch him stretch. He didn't run that much, but he was stretching all the time. And he had those fluorescent green batting gloves. All that was entertainment. You just looked at him and said, 'That guy is special.' It was just the little things. He'd get on base. The way he ran. It was so cool. The snap catch, especially when he was at the top of his game."
--INF Anthony Hewitt, the Phillies' first-round draft pick in 2008, has been added to the list of non-roster invites to spring training. It has been the Phillies' policy in recent years to invite their most recent first-round pick to major league camp. RHP Kyle Drabek, their 2006 first-rounder, was in camp in 2007, and 2007 first-round LHP Joe Savery was in camp last year. Hewitt, 19, struggled in his first pro season. After signing with the Phillies last summer, he batted .197 with seven doubles, one homer and nine RBIs in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
BY THE NUMBERS: 23 -- Non-roster players invited to the Phillies' major league spring training camp. The list includes top prospects such as INF Jason Donald and LHP Antonio Bastardo, and veteran major league INFs Marcus Giles and Pablo Ozuna.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "The goal is to be a starting pitcher. That's what I'm accustomed to, and that's 100 percent what I'm shooting for. This is what I do and what I love to do, and I'm going to give everything I can to win that spot." -- LHP J.A. Happ, to the team's Web site, on his upcoming competition with RHP Chan Ho Park and others for the final spot in the Phillies rotation.
