Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-04-11

Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-04-11
--1B Ryan Howard grounded into three double plays Friday, something only four players did in 2008 (Yunel Escobar of Atlanta, Alex Rios of Toronto, A.J. Pierzynski of the White Sox and Gary Matthews Jr. of the Angels). Howard's problems only mirrored his teammates. The Phillies went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base.

--RHP Kyle Kendrick won 21 games over the past two seasons for the Phillies despite throwing mainly a sinker, and was sent back to the minors this season to develop his off-speed pitches. Of the 83 pitches Kendrick threw in his Class AAA debut Thursday night, 11 were changeups. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits, walked three and struck out one in four innings of an 11-3 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

--SS Jimmy Rollins campaigned for Barack Obama last year and attended the inauguration in January, so he's rather excited about meeting the president Tuesday when the Phillies visit the White House. He also said he can relate to Obama's critics. "That's just natural," Rollins told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Hey, we want you in, only to one day complain. Eventually, they either vote you in again or not vote you in again. Just like with a manager or GM. You hire that person only to one day fire them."

--LHP Jamie Moyer dug up the pitching rubber from the mound during the World Series-clinching celebration. He rode in the parade down Broad Street. But it wasn't until Wednesday, as he waited to get his ring, when it all finally sunk in.

"During the World Series and the parade, it was like it just happened," Moyer said, fighting back tears. "But since we all went our own ways for the offseason and we've had some time to reflect on the excitement about last season, now it all hits. And it's all good."

Moyer and his 2008 Phillies teammates have something tangible to assure they'll never forget last October -- and it is 14-karat gold. The World Series rings, designed and shrouded in secrecy for months, finally were revealed and presented to the players. Each ring contains 103 diamonds, one for every regular-season and playoff victory last season. The ring is crowned with a ruby inlay, topped with a diamond-studded "P," and has "World Series Champions" inscribed on the top and bottom outer rim. The player's name and number are featured above and below the Liberty Bell on the left side, and the right side features a World Series trophy rising out of Citizens Bank Park.

Asked how much it cost, Phillies senior vice president Jerry Clothier said, "It's priceless."

Said Moyer, 46, the majors' oldest player and a 23-year veteran, "I need to put it on two fingers. I had no expectation to what this ring would look like, but it exceeds any expectations I could have."

--LHP Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi, are trying to adopt a child from Ethiopia, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Initially, the Hamelses were looking into adopting a child from Malawi, but they grew frustrated with regulations that required parents to live in the country for 18 to 24 months before getting permission to adopt. Ethiopian rules require only a nine-month waiting period for adoption. Last week, Madonna endured a publicized rejection of her attempt to adopt a Malawian child. "We were in the same situation as Madonna, and there is no way we could live over there for two years," Hamels told the newspaper. "It shouldn't be so hard to try to give someone a better life. The government in that country, it's shady."

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Homers for INF Miguel Cairo this spring. He hasn't hit one in the regular season since 2005.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's exciting. You play for so many years and you still got to know you made the team. This year was a little difficult, but I came through. And hopefully, I'll stay here all year long." -- INF Miguel Cairo, a 13-year veteran, on making the opening-day roster.
