Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-06-09
--RHP Chad Durbin found himself in the Phillies' bullpen at the beginning of the season, and he sought the advice of nearly everyone he knows about how to be a successful relief pitcher. Now, it's almost second nature. Durbin tossed two scoreless innings and earned the victory Sunday, continuing his stellar season. Durbin, a starter for most of his career, has made 25 appearances for the Phillies as both a long reliever and a late-inning setup man and posted a 2-1 record and 1.67 ERA.

"Mad Dog (Ryan Madson) really helped with how to get loose," Durbin said. "You always wonder: am I getting loose too quick? Am I throwing too much? ...Flash (Tom Gordon) and (closer Brad) Lidge have been helpful. Flash talks about tempo. It's great to have that kind of feedback."

--RHP Adam Eaton was unable to hold 2-0 and 3-2 leads in the first three innings, but for the first time since 2004, he has made four straight quality starts (six innings or more, three runs or less). In his last four starts against the Astros (May 23), Rockies (May 28), Reds (June 3) and Braves, Eaton is 2-1 with a 2.81 ERA.

"I just want to keep taking the ball every five days and keep throwing good innings up there," said Eaton, who allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings and is 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 13 starts overall. "Our offense is going to take care of us, and right now, we're going through a good stretch pitching-wise. We're kind of taking care of each other." Eaton hasn't had such a solid stretch since June 6 to July 3, 2004, when he went 3-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six straight quality starts for the Padres.

--CF Shane Victorino batted .417 (5-for-12) with six runs and two RBIs in the three-game sweep of the Braves. Victorino scored three runs and drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out single in the Phillies' three-run ninth inning Sunday. "Since we got here, we knew every game was big, especially since (Atlanta) is a division rival," Victorino said. "You either gain ground or lose ground, and we gained a lot of ground."

--RHP Brad Lidge threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning Sunday and improved to 17-for-17 in save chances. Lidge also has a 0.96 ERA and ranks second in the NL in saves behind the Cubs' Kerry Wood, who has 18.

--OF Chris Snelling was outrighted to Class AAA Lehigh Valley before Saturday night's game in order for the Phillies to activate outfielder OF Jayson Werth from the disabled list. Snelling, who is out of minor-league options, has three days to accept the assignment or become a free agent. "Snelling can hit," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's got a good swing. He works hard at hitting. But the way we set up, it's kind of hard for us to keep him. It's a process where he gets eliminated because of what we feel like we have to do with our team."

The Phillies believe Snelling is valuable to their depth. He's 2-for-4 this season, and both hits were clutch. He slugged a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning April 15 before his timely double Friday night. Odds are, Snelling will accept the assignment. His contract with the Phillies stipulates that he makes $450,000 in the majors. If he signs with another team, it likely would be for the major-league minimum ($390,000).

BY THE NUMBERS: 12 -- Pitchers used by the Phillies this season, the fewest in the majors. Last season, the Phillies set a franchise record by using 28 different pitchers.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "If you want things in the season to go good, you need to have some of those 'Force Be With You' moments." -- Closer Brad Lidge, channeling Yoda to explain the Phillies' thrilling back-from-the-dead, hold-on-for-dear-life victory in 10 innings last Friday night in Atlanta.
