Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-04-30
--RHP Ryan Madson will be ready to step in as the Phillies' closer if Brad Lidge's balky right knee doesn't respond to a bullpen session Friday. After nearly five years of achieving little consistency as either a starter or reliever, Madson emerged last September as a hard-throwing and reliable setup man. He thrived in the playoffs, signed a three-year, $12 million contract in the offseason, and now, with Lidge dealing with inflammation in his knee, the Phillies have designated Madson as the fill-in closer.

"I think coming off the World Series and the playoff atmosphere, learning how to control those emotions and just being there and doing it before, it definitely helped put me in a better spot than I was last year or two years ago," Madson told the Wilmington (Del.) News Journal. "The pressure is always going to be there in this game. It's how you deal with it, and I think I can deal with it much better now than before."

Lidge said he could pitch Friday night against the New York Mets if he feels good in the bullpen before the game. But if his knee continues to bother him, it's possible the Phillies could put Lidge on the disabled list retroactive to last Saturday. "That's where I'm really crossing my fingers," Lidge said. "(Friday) is the big day."

--RHP Brett Myers posted a quality start Wednesday night against the Nationals. However, he took the loss in a 4-1 decision in the series finale and was angry with himself for walking three batters in the third inning, including Nationals LHP Scott Olsen. After loading the bases on a double, two walks and a fielder's choice, Myers walked Ryan Zimmerman to force home a run. "I got a little upset with myself with missing my spots and kind of let it get to me," Myers said. "I'm better than that. I wasn't trying to walk the pitcher. I'm trying to throw strikes. It just didn't happen, and ultimately, it cost me a run."

--2B Chase Utley belted a two-run homer in the third inning and added a solo shot in the sixth against Nationals LHP John Lannan in Tuesday night's 7-1 rout. It was Utley's 16th career multi-homer game and his first since April 20, 2008. "The weather's warming up, and when the weather warms up, the ball is going to travel a little more," Utley said. "We have a lot of good hitters, from top to bottom, and we can swing the bats pretty well."

BY THE NUMBERS: 40 -- Through Sunday, runs scored by the Phillies in the seventh inning or later, most in the majors.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We'll be all right. We're a team that hangs around and hangs around, and when it's time to kick it in gear, we do. That's what we've done the past two years. I'm not saying that's the right way to do it, but it's definitely an excuse for right now." -- RF Jayson Werth last week after the Phillies' record fell to 6-8
