Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-02
--3B Greg Dobbs notched another pinch-hit in the sixth inning Friday night, moving him into seventh place on the Phillies' all-time list with 38 career pinch-hits. But Dobbs also committed a baserunning gaffe that may have cost the Phillies a run. Slow-footed C Chris Coste decided he couldn't score from third base when Mets SS Jose Reyes' throw sailed wide of third. Dobbs kept running toward third, however, forcing Coste to get tagged out in a rundown between third and home. "When the play is in front of you, it was a bad time in the game to have that play," manager Charlie Manuel said. "It was a mistake, and we messed up. The ball is right there in front of you. You can just about see where (Coste) is at. It's the responsibility of the runner on second. You're supposed to be heads-up."

--RHP Clay Condrey was waived five times during the 2007 season. Not once was he claimed. He served as the Phillies' long reliever last season but finished with a 3.26 ERA in 69 innings. And this season, he has pitched in more high-pressure situations and held opponents to a .195 average. Condrey, 33, is 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA, tops on the Phillies' pitching staff.

"I've always had confidence in him," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "I think his changeup has improved. I think he's always had a real good sinker and a pretty good cutter. I think it's probably confidence, a lot of it. He's always going to be a guy that gives up hits. He's always going to be a contact guy. But he can get a ton of groundballs."

--RHP Brett Myers posted a quality start Wednesday night against the Nationals. However, he took the loss in a 4-1 decision in the series finale and was angry with himself for walking three batters in the third inning, including Nationals LHP Scott Olsen. After loading the bases on a double, two walks and a fielder's choice, Myers walked Ryan Zimmerman to force home a run. "I got a little upset with myself with missing my spots and kind of let it get to me," Myers said. "I'm better than that. I wasn't trying to walk the pitcher. I'm trying to throw strikes. It just didn't happen, and ultimately, it cost me a run."

BY THE NUMBERS: 40 -- Through Sunday, runs scored by the Phillies in the seventh inning or later, most in the majors.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We'll be all right. We're a team that hangs around and hangs around, and when it's time to kick it in gear, we do. That's what we've done the past two years. I'm not saying that's the right way to do it, but it's definitely an excuse for right now." -- RF Jayson Werth last week after the Phillies' record fell to 6-8
