Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-05
--RHP Joe Blanton made a slight mechanical adjustment last week that he said sharpened his slider. It showed. Blanton allowed one run on four hits in six innings to give the Phillies a rare quality start Monday night against the Cardinals. "I felt everything coming together a little bit," Blanton said. Entering Monday night, the Phillies' starters had combined for a worst-in-the-majors 6.71 ERA. "We know we can pitch," Blanton said. "We know what we did at the end of last season, and we know we can do that again. It's just a matter of us putting a few good runs together. We're not going to go through the season with 7.00 or 9.00 or 12.00 ERAs."

--RHP Chan Ho Park's struggles on the mound are wide-ranging. Park, 0-1 with an 8.75 ERA in four starts, hasn't been staying ahead in the count, Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee said. Manager Charlie Manuel noted that Park's arm slot hasn't been consistent. Park, after taking the weekend to mull his latest poor start, continued to talk Monday about a lack of focus. But the Phillies will give him another chance to figure things out. Park will make his next start Wednesday in New York against the Mets. "I've got to be confident," Park said Monday in St. Louis. "When you have confidence, you trust yourself and don't give hitters too much credit. That's the kind of thing that's going to make you pitch positive. You have to be positive and be aggressive."

BY THE NUMBERS: 6.71 -- ERA of the Phillies' starting pitchers through Sunday, worst in the majors and nearly a full run worse than the next-worst team (Cleveland, 5.82).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's kind of our forte. We get in their bullpen, work the starter. We've got a lot of guys that play good under pressure. This whole team is kind of built that way. So, this fits into our gameplan." -- RF Jayson Werth, after the Phillies' latest comeback victory, a 10-inning, 6-5 win over the Mets last Sunday.
