Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-07
--RHP Brett Myers was 2-2 with a 5.11 ERA through six starts last season. By July, things had gotten so bad that he wound up in the minor leagues. In six starts this season, Myers is 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA. But pitching coach Rich Dubee said Wednesday that he isn't as worried about Myers as he was a year ago. "He's just making too many mistakes," Dubee said.

Myers has allowed a majors-leading 10 home runs in 37 innings. Based on the radar-gun reading Tuesday at Busch Stadium, Manuel said Myers' fastball was topping out at about 88 mph. Myers countered by saying the gun reading was inaccurate. Dubee agreed. But Myers also hasn't been throwing with his usual fastball velocity.

"If he's not throwing 93, he has to be better with his location," Dubee said. "He's making mistakes in the middle of the plate, and they've been getting hit."

--RHP Joe Blanton made a slight mechanical adjustment last week that he said sharpened his slider. It showed. Blanton allowed one run on four hits in six innings to give the Phillies a rare quality start Monday night against the Cardinals.

"I felt everything coming together a little bit," Blanton said. Entering Monday night, the Phillies' starters had combined for a worst-in-the-majors 6.71 ERA. "We know we can pitch," Blanton said. "We know what we did at the end of last season, and we know we can do that again. It's just a matter of us putting a few good runs together. We're not going to go through the season with 7.00 or 9.00 or 12.00 ERAs."

BY THE NUMBERS: 6.71 -- ERA of the Phillies' starting pitchers through Sunday, worst in the majors and nearly a full run worse than the next-worst team (Cleveland, 5.82).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's kind of our forte. We get in their bullpen, work the starter. We've got a lot of guys that play good under pressure. This whole team is kind of built that way. So, this fits into our gameplan." -- RF Jayson Werth, after the Phillies' latest comeback victory, a 10-inning, 6-5 win over the Mets last Sunday.
