Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-09
--CF Shane Victorino went 0-for-4 Friday night against the Atlanta Braves and had his career-high 16-game hitting streak snapped. Victorino batted .352 (25-for-71) with five doubles, two triples, three home runs, 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored during the streak. When the streak began on April 19, Victorino was batting .220. Entering Friday night's game, his average had risen to .304. Victorino was superstitious throughout the streak, preferring not to share his secrets. But OF Matt Stairs told the Phillies' Web site Friday that Victorino has been borrowing his Rawlings-made bat. "It's top-heavier, so he just like the way it feels," Stairs said. "He thinks it slows his body down a little more, and once you get the barrel through the zone, you get some pop off the bat because it's top-heavy. When I got here last year, he started using them and he liked them. He liked the feel of the bat. But he uses a lot of people's bats. I don't even think he has a bat contract." In exchange, Stairs said he has been wearing a pair of Victorino's cleats.

--LHP J.A. Happ has made a smooth transition from starter to reliever. After being edged by RHP Chan Ho Park in a spring-training competition for the Phillies' fifth-starter job, Happ has posted a 2.84 ERA in 10 relief appearances. "It's a little different, preparation-wise," Happ told the Phillies' Web site about pitching out of the bullpen. "I'm starting to get a feel for when I might come in. The guys have helped me out." But Happ may be able to help the rotation, too. Entering Friday night's series-opener against the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies' starters had a 6.26 ERA, worst in the majors for a starting rotation. Happ was a starter throughout his minor-league career and pitched well in a pair of starts against the Braves last September. But he insists he isn't thinking about returning to the rotation. "I just want to keep getting guys out at this level," he said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 6.71 -- ERA of the Phillies' starting pitchers through Sunday, worst in the majors and nearly a full run worse than the next-worst team (Cleveland, 5.82).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's kind of our forte. We get in their bullpen, work the starter. We've got a lot of guys that play good under pressure. This whole team is kind of built that way. So, this fits into our gameplan." -- RF Jayson Werth, after the Phillies' latest comeback victory, a 10-inning, 6-5 win over the Mets last Sunday.
