Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-13
--Manager Charlie Manuel will lead the National League in the All-Star Game on July 14, but he said he hasn't started thinking about breaking the league's 12-year winless streak against the American League. "No pressure," Manuel said. "Pressure was a long time ago. That's gone. But we'll break the streak. We're going there to win. I can say that." Manuel said he isn't ready to announce the two NL managers that he'll choose to join the Phillies' coaching staff at the All-Star Game. "Take a guess," he said. Manuel often speaks highly of Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who once enlisted Manuel to join his coaching staff in the 2002 All-Star Game. Another good bet would be St. Louis Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa.

--LHP Jamie Moyer will attempt to bounce back from one of the worst starts of his 23-year career -- and earn his 250th career victory -- when he takes the mound Wednesday against the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park. Last Thursday, Moyer allowed seven runs and seven hits in only 2 1/3 innings against the Mets in New York. After the game, he said he'd likely turn to his usual routine after a bad start: He would watch a video from June 10, 2002, when he threw a five-hit shutout for the Seattle Mariners against the St. Louis Cardinals. "I'm just watching it to watch," Moyer said. "I'm watching myself, my body movements, the way the ball approaches the plate. To me, you reiterate the positive."

--Moyer gave the commencement address Monday at Holy Family University at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. He received an honorary doctorate in humane letter for his work with the Moyer Foundation, which helps children cope with physical, emotional and financial distress.

BY THE NUMBERS: .485 -- The Phillies' batting average with the bases loaded, best in the majors.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When we got back, the first couple games were like, what am I doing? It was rough. Your skills and effort don't change. It was just hard to get up. But the last 15 games or so, I've been feeling refreshed. You get that air back in that balloon." -- SS Jimmy Rollins, on the initial letdown after playing for the United States in the World Baseball Classic in March.
