Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-14
--Manager Charlie Manuel has named Dodgers manager Joe Torre to the National League coaching staff at the All-Star Game on July 14 in St. Louis. Torre included Manuel on the American League All-Star staff in 2002. Manuel hasn't announced his other coaching pick, but Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is a good bet. "It's a privilege and an honor," Torre said. "I'm definitely going."

--RHP Chan Ho Park offers several reasons for his improved performance over his last two starts, including a better sinker and more aggressiveness on the inside corner. But he also credits C Carlos Ruiz. Park has joined the chorus of Phillies pitchers who enjoy working with Ruiz, who developed a reputation last season as a superior defensive catcher. But Ruiz was on the disabled list during Park's first four starts, and pitching to backup Chris Coste and rookie Lou Marson, Park posted an 8.57 ERA. Clearly, Park has been sharper during his last two starts, allowing just two runs on eight hits and two walks in 12 innings (1.50 ERA) against the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers and securing his once-tenuous spot in the Phillies rotation. But he attributes a lot of that success to Ruiz. "He's a good catcher," Park said Wednesday, one day after picking up his first victory in his sixth start for the Phillies. "Not just a good catcher. He's a champion catcher. He reads (a game) pretty good. He understands a game. I don't have to shake (him off) a lot. That's good. I like him."

--LHP Jamie Moyer gave the commencement address Monday at Holy Family University at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. He received an honorary doctorate in humane letter for his work with the Moyer Foundation, which helps children cope with physical, emotional and financial distress.

BY THE NUMBERS: .485 -- The Phillies' batting average with the bases loaded, best in the majors through May 10.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When we got back, the first couple games were like, what am I doing? It was rough. Your skills and effort don't change. It was just hard to get up. But the last 15 games or so, I've been feeling refreshed. You get that air back in that balloon." -- SS Jimmy Rollins, on the initial letdown after playing for the United States in the World Baseball Classic in March.
