Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-06-28
--RHP Clay Condrey speaks in an often undecipherable Texas twang, one of the many signs of his pride in his Lone Star roots. But in his first career appearance against the Rangers on Friday night, he was asked to clean up starter Brett Myers' mess. Condrey inherited a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the third inning and got Marlon Byrd to ground into a double play. But later, things turned sour. Condrey allowed a go-ahead, two-run homer to rookie Chris Davis, and after the Phillies tied the game in the fourth, he served up Milton Bradley's go-ahead solo home run in the fifth. Condrey took the loss, as the Phillies fell for the 11th time in 13 games.

--3B Pedro Feliz got the Phillies' first hit of Friday night's game, and with it, he gave them a 5-1 lead. Feliz belted his fifth career grand slam against Rangers starter Kason Gabbard in the Phillies' five-run third inning. And while the Phillies offense has been mired in a team-wide slump, Feliz quietly has been hitting the ball well. He has a five-game hitting streak, and in his last eight games, Feliz is 9-for-26 (.346) with one home run and eight RBIs.

--1B Ryan Howard set a major league record last season with 199 strikeouts, and he remains on pace to shatter that mark this year. Howard whiffed three more times in the Phillies' loss Friday night in Texas, giving him 112 strikeouts in 304 at-bats. He also has only five hits in his last 36 at-bats, a slide that has dropped his average from a season-high .224 to .214.

--SS Jimmy Rollins drove in a run with a groundout in the third inning Friday night, marking the kind of productive out the Phillies hitters have not been making. But he failed to do anything productive in the fourth inning. With two on, one out and the game tied, Rollins bounced into a rally-killing double play.

BY THE NUMBERS: 73 -- Victories for LHP Jamie Moyer since he turned 40. Moyer had only 34 wins while he was in his 20s.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When we're not hitting home runs, it's hard for us to manufacture runs. This series, even when guys got into scoring position, we had a hard time knocking them in." -- Manager Charlie Manuel, after the Phillies scored nine runs in five straight losses last week to the Red Sox and Angels.
