Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-06-30
--RF Geoff Jenkins usually starts for the Phillies against right-handed pitching. Not last weekend. Jenkins, mired in a 2-for-41 slump, took a seat on the bench against Rangers RHPs Vicente Padilla and Eric Hurley. Jenkins is hitless in his last 26 at-bats and has watched his average drop nearly 50 points from .288 on June 2 to .239. He has been working with manager Charlie Manuel and hitting coach Milt Thompson to correct a flaw in his swing. "It's actually a simple adjustment," Jenkins told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I have to lower my hands a little bit so that my elbow just relaxes. Over the course of your career, you make adjustments. I've been working on it the last couple days, and it feels great."

--RHP Tom Gordon became concerned when he couldn't reach fellow reliever J.C. Romero during a recent long-toss session. Gordon, the 40-year-old setup man, concluded he was going through a "dead arm" phase, and after 10 days of rest, he returned to the mound last Thursday in Oakland. Gordon allowed two runs (one earned) during that inning, but he reported feeling better. "My command was all over the place, but I wasn't worried about that," Gordon said. "As long as I was able to throw, I felt like I was OK."

--RHP Kris Benson's recovery from March 2007 shoulder surgery continued with his first Class AAA start Sunday, and he got mixed reviews. Benson, 33, allowed four runs on five hits in four innings. He threw 73 pitches (49 strikes), and his fastball velocity was consistently in the upper-80s and lower-90s. Benson, who hasn't pitched in the majors since Sept. 27, 2006, likely will need a few more starts for Class AAA Lehigh Valley before he's ready to join the Phillies. When he returns, he could take the spot occupied by struggling RHP Brett Myers.

--RHP Brad Lidge hadn't had a save opportunity since June 12, so he felt a little rusty Saturday night. But after Lidge escaped a two-on, one-out jam against the Rangers, he pumped his fist and celebrated his 19th save in as many chances for the Phillies. "I haven't had that kind of adrenaline in a while," Lidge said. "We haven't been playing our best baseball, but the good news is we're still in first place."

BY THE NUMBERS: 111 -- Consecutive innings from June 13 through June 28 that the Phillies failed to string together three straight hits. The drought ended during their three-run second inning Saturday night in Texas.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's a hard read. What do we do with him in the bullpen? I don't know. If it happens, we'll see. We saw a different animal last year in the bullpen." -- Pitching coach Rich Dubee, on the possibility that struggling starter Brett Myers could be removed from the starting rotation.
