Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-07-08
--LF Pat Burrell enhanced his All-Star candidacy Monday night with his 22nd home run, a solo shot in the sixth inning that broke an 0-for-21 spell in his career against Mets starter Pedro Martinez. It marked his 240th career homer, which ranks fourth on the Phillies' all-time list, three short of Chuck Klein. It also marked his 795th career RBI, moving him into ninth place on the franchise's all-time list.

--RHP Brett Myers allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, struck out six and walked two in 7 1/3 innings of his second start for Class AAA Lehigh Valley (Pa.). Myers, who agreed to a minor league assignment last week to recover his mechanics and clear his head, got the victory. He will pitch again Saturday for Class AA Reading (Pa.) and could rejoin the Phillies after the All-Star break.

--1B Ryan Howard extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a second-inning single and has driven in a run in eight of his last nine games. With his two-run homer in the seventh inning, Howard has an NL-leading 78 RBIs, one shy of the Phillies' record for RBIs before the All-Star break. Greg Luzinski had 79 RBIs at the break in 1975.

--LHP R.J. Swindle made his major league debut after being recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley (Pa.) to replace RHP Tom Gordon, who was placed on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. In three innings, Swindle allowed two runs on a homer by the Mets' David Wright. Swindle threw his patented slow curveball, many of which were clocked in the mid-50s. "I think he can get out lefties," manager Charlie Manuel said. "I want to see more of him. His style of pitching, his stuff, you're not used to seeing a guy like that."

--RHP Adam Eaton got hammered for 10 hits and lasted only 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing since last Sept. 29. Eaton's ERA rocketed to 5.20, and on a night when the Phillies' exhausted bullpen could have used the rest, he gave them none. "Watching how we battled back offensively, if I just gave an average performance, it's a different story," Eaton said. "This loss was definitely put on the right person."

BY THE NUMBERS: 495 -- Career games needed by Ryan Howard to reach the 150-homer plateau. He is the fastest player to the 150-home run mark, surpassing Eddie Mathews (569 games).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'll put it this way: There's a lot of things in life that a lot of people don't want to do. But you're getting paid. You've got to show up for work and do the best job you can. He's a gamer. I think he'll give it 100 percent, whether it's in a closer situation or as a starter." -- GM Pat Gillick, on the future of RHP Brett Myers, who has stated his preference for pitching out of the bullpen.
