Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-07-30
--LHP J.A. Happ knew something was afoot Sunday when he was lifted from a start for Class AAA Lehigh Valley after tossing just 41 pitches in 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Had he been traded? Were the Phillies calling him up? "They didn't say anything," Happ said. "They said they heard from the organization to hold me to 40 (pitches). I tried to get something out of (Lehigh Valley pitching coach Rod Nichols), but he either didn't bite or he didn't know anything." The Phillies waited until Monday night, after RHP Adam Eaton accepted his minor league assignment and they still hadn't acquired a lefty reliever, to tell Happ that he was being recalled. In the short-term, he'll be used as a lefty out of the bullpen. But he has been a starter throughout his career, and manager Charlie Manuel left open the possibility that he may start for the Phillies if RHP Brett Myers is unable to reach his top-of-the-rotation potential.

--3B Pedro Feliz continues to have pain in his lower back. So, the Phils placed Feliz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 25, and recalled INF Mike Cervanek from Lehigh Valley. Feliz, who didn't play in the three-game series against the Braves and is 1-for-21 with one RBI and nine strikeouts since the All-Star break, began feeling discomfort in late June. He's eligible to be activated before an Aug. 9 game against the Pirates. Greg Dobbs and Eric Bruntlett will share third base in Feliz's spot.

--RHP Tom Gordon (right elbow inflammation) has thrown off a mound three times in Clearwater, Fla., but pitching coach Rich Dubee said there's still no timetable for his return. Gordon, who went on the disabled list July 7, likely will have to face batters under simulated conditions or in a minor league game before he rejoins the Phillies.

--RHP Adam Eaton will make his first minor league start Thursday at Class A Lakewood. Eaton isn't expected to rejoin the Phils until after Labor Day. Eaton agreed to a minor league assignment Monday after being removed from the starting rotation and struggling to adapt to a relief role. Eaton is 4-8 with a 5.80 ERA in 21 appearances (19 starts).

BY THE NUMBERS: 20 -- Pinch-hits for Greg Dobbs through July 27. That total led the majors and tied a 94-year-old Phillies record for pinch-hits in a season set by Doc Miller in 1913.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's disappointing. It's unfortunate. But rules are rules. I commend Charlie for standing up to the rules that he has, and I think we all need to be accountable to that. You create who you are in the clubhouse by how you act and the way you carry yourself." -- LHP Jamie Moyer on the benching of tardy SS Jimmy Rollins last Thursday in New York.
