Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-08-08
--RHP Tom Gordon, who left a rehab start Wednesday with elbow discomfort, flew to Philadelphia to be examined by team physician Michael Ciccotti. The Phils didn't have an update on Gordon's condition. "We're not optimistic," assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We're still waiting on some diagnostics, but we're not optimistic we're going to have him anytime soon."

Gordon, the Phils' 40-year-old setup man, has been on the disabled list since July 6 with right elbow inflammation. He was pitching for Class A Clearwater on Wednesday.

--3B Pedro Feliz has been cleared to resume baseball activities by Dr. Todd Albert, a back specialist. But the Phillies don't expect Feliz to be ready to play until after they return from a seven-game trip Aug. 17. Feliz has been on the disabled list since July 29 with a bulging disk in his lower back.

"Backs are tricky," assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He started doing some exercises. I think he actually started throwing and doing some other things. We're probably going to get him out next week at some point, if he's healthy enough to do so, on a rehab stint of some sort."

--LHP Cole Hamels has a 3.35 ERA, but his record is only 9-8. Hamels' latest hard-luck loss came Thursday when he allowed two earned runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. But the Phils' vaunted offense was shut out, 3-0, by Marlins rookie Chris Volstad and four relievers. Hamels has allowed three runs or fewer eight times without getting a win, including 1-0 and 2-0 losses. During those eight games, Hamels is 0-4 with four no-decisions. He has a 3.19 ERA in his last six losses.

--1B Ryan Howard is the runaway leader with 14 errors among major league first basemen. His latest miscue came in the seventh inning when he threw wide to second base on Mike Jacobs' grounder to first. Later in the inning, Hanley Ramirez drove in a run on a groundout to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead. Howard committed 12 errors last season and 14 in 2006.

BY THE NUMBERS: 13 -- Consecutive games in which the Phillies hit a home run, through Aug. 5.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I knew we had an off-day (Monday), so I wanted to get some extra work in." -- Closer Brad Lidge, after working out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam Sunday night to record his 28th save in as many chances.
