Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-09-15

Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-09-15
--1B Ryan Howard has 22 hits in his last 58 at-bats -- and eight home runs and 21 RBIs in his last 15 games -- and may have put himself into consideration for the NL MVP award. "The numbers speak for themselves," admittedly biased manager Charlie Manuel said of Howard, who leads the majors with 44 homers and 133 RBIs. "Who's close to him? You can say whatever you want to say. He has RBIs and he has homers. He's the best run-producer in the National League."

--LF Pat Burrell has been mired in a dreadful slump for three weeks. But he delivered a big hit for the Phillies in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader. Burrell laced an RBI single through the left side of the infield to drive home Jayson Werth with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of a 7-3 victory over the reeling Brewers that moved the Phillies to within one game of Milwaukee in the NL wild-card standings.

"It was big, man," Burrell said. "I've been really struggling. I really haven't been contributing much at all. I can't lie. I needed to get a hit in that situation."

Burrell entered in a 9-for-66 (.136) slump, but manager Charlie Manuel kept him in the lineup because he was 4-for-10 with three home runs and five RBIs against Brewers RHP Dave Bush. Burrell's big hit, though, came against LHP Brian Shouse. Brewers manager Ned Yost stuck with Shouse even though RHP Eric Gagne was warming in the bullpen and Burrell is a .261 hitter against lefties compared to .246 against right-handers.

"That was a big hit he got," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "That makes you feel real good."

--RHP Brett Myers continued his second-half resurgence with a complete-game two-hitter in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader. In 11 starts since returning from a three-week stint in the minors, Myers is 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA, the second-lowest in the NL since the All-Star break. He threw his eighth career complete game and second this season. Most impressive, he did it while working on only three days of rest. Myers threw only 95 pitches and said he concentrated less on getting strikeouts than quick outs. Myers is 10-11 and has lowered his ERA to 4.06 from 5.84 when he agreed to a minor league assignment on July 1. Myers has reached double digits in wins for the fourth time in his career.

--RHP Joe Blanton had lacked his usual pinpoint control, issuing 18 walks in 30 2/3 innings in six starts entering Sunday. And his reputation as an "innings-eater" took a hit when he finished the sixth inning only once in that stretch. Turns out, he was injured. After Blanton tossed seven solid innings in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader, pitching coach Rich Dubee said that Blanton had pitched through a mild bout of biceps tendinitis for at least two starts. To cope with the discomfort, he unknowingly altered his mechanics, changing his arm slot and affecting his control.

Blanton, who had a 5.58 ERA in six starts from Aug. 13 through Sept. 8, said he corrected his flaws during a bullpen session last week. He held the Brewers to five hits and two walks, throwing 64 strikes in 99 pitches.

"I put in a lot of work in between my last start and this start to get mechanically sound and get right," Blanton said. "I felt like I had a good base built, and I just tried to stick with it the whole game and attack the (strike) zone."

--LHP Scott Eyre has two words scribbled on the underside of his cap: "Have fun." In the six weeks since he got dealt to the Phillies, Eyre has had so much fun that he'd like to return after the season. And, at age 36, the veteran lefty reliever said he is even willing to take a one-year contract. "I'd be happy with that, sure," Eyre said. Eyre has a 1.64 ERA in 14 games for the Phillies. On Sunday, he struck out Ray Durham on a foul tip to end the eighth inning of the opener, then got lefty slugger Prince Fielder to ground out to open the ninth. "It was hard to have fun (with the Cubs) because I wasn't pitching a lot," Eyre said. "But I feel like I fit with the guys here. It's a different team, a different atmosphere."

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Times during Charlie Manuel's four-year tenure as Phillies manager that the team has scored a run via sacrifice bunt or a bunt single. Both times, C Carlos Ruiz has dropped a sacrifice bunt. Ruiz pulled off the squeeze play May 12, 2007, and again on Sept. 11.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We'll get (the umpires) a lot of cheesesteaks. Make sure we keep them happy." -- Manager Charlie Manuel, upon learning that the Phillies won all four coin tosses to assure any possible tie-breaker games against the Mets, Brewers, Astros or Cardinals for the right to advance to the playoffs will be played at Citizens Bank Park.
