Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-09-16
--LHP Jamie Moyer, working on three days' rest, pitched the Phillies to a 6-3 victory over the Brewers on Thursday night. Though he pitched well, he cautioned that the effects of his 88-pitch effort may not be seen for another two starts. But Moyer threw a bullpen session Sunday that pitching coach Rich Dubee labeled as "great." Moyer is slated to pitch Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Atlanta. Asked how many pitches the 45-year-old Moyer will be able to throw, Dubee said, "We'll watch how he goes. If he's going along smoothly, then the ball will be in his hands."

--RHP Kyle Kendrick remains the top candidate to start for the Phillies on Wednesday night in Atlanta, although pitching coach Rich Dubee said the club is "in no hurry" to make that decision. The options: Kendrick (11.35 ERA over his last six starts), inexperienced LHP J.A. Happ (three career major league starts) or maligned RHP Adam Eaton (6.10 ERA in two seasons with the Phillies). Kendrick is the favorite, if only because neither Happ nor Eaton has started a game since the minor league season ended Labor Day weekend.

--RF Jayson Werth is ready for some football. Werth has Bengals WR Chad (Johnson) Ocho Cinco on his fantasy football team. Trying to coax a good performance out of him, Werth, who wears No. 28 for the Phillies, had "J. Dos Ocho" taped to the back of his Phillies fleece before Sunday's doubleheader. The tape was later placed over his locker.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Times during Charlie Manuel's four-year tenure as Phillies manager that the team has scored a run via sacrifice bunt or a bunt single. Both times, C Carlos Ruiz has dropped a sacrifice bunt. Ruiz pulled off the squeeze play May 12, 2007, and again on Sept. 11.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We'll get (the umpires) a lot of cheesesteaks. Make sure we keep them happy." -- Manager Charlie Manuel, upon learning that the Phillies won all four coin tosses to assure any possible tie-breaker games against the Mets, Brewers, Astros or Cardinals for the right to advance to the playoffs will be played at Citizens Bank Park.
