Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-09-18
--LHP J.A. Happ had a 4-0 lead before he even threw a pitch Wednesday night, helping him to relax after a shaky pregame warm-up in the bullpen. "I had a horrible bullpen (session)," Happ said. But he settled and allowed only three hits in six scoreless innings to earn his first major league win. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee picked Happ to make the start rather than struggling Kyle Kendrick. Asked if he thought the Phillies were taking a chance with Happ, Manuel said Happ's strong 6 1/3-inning performance July 9 against the Cardinals was an indication that he could have more success.

"He was outstanding," Dubee said. "His demeanor was great. His presence was great. He didn't do anything wrong."

Added 45-year-old LHP Jamie Moyer, "It's great to see him throw the ball the way he did. He pitched the way you're supposed to pitch. The big thing is that he knows he can pitch here."

But will Happ pitch Monday night against the Braves when the Phillies again will need a fifth starter to complete their rotation?

"I'll let you know," Dubee said with a smile. "Six shutout innings is six shutout innings. He was very impressive."

--LHP Jamie Moyer -- at 45, the oldest player in the majors -- throws from 60 and 100 pitches in his between-starts bullpen sessions. Most pitchers half his age throw about 45 to 50. So, after starting on three days of rest last week for the first time since 2004, Moyer performed his usual rigorous routine in the bullpen. But he struggled Tuesday night, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks in only 5 2/3 innings against the Braves. Was he overtired? "I don't think so," Moyer said Wednesday. "Strength-wise, I didn't think it had any bearing. I had a really good pregame (throwing session), and the first inning I felt good. The second inning it wasn't there. Horrible command. I was struggling to complete my mechanics."

In the interest of late-season preservation, pitching coach Rich Dubee said he likely will talk with Moyer about a slightly less aggressive between-starts schedule. Generally, though, Dubee agrees with Moyer's approach and believes young pitchers don't throw enough. Earlier this season, he wanted Brett Myers to long-toss between starts.

"(Moyer) throws more than any pitcher I know," Dubee said. "That's why he's been around so long."

--LF Pat Burrell went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts Tuesday night, equaling a club record set by Jim Thome on July 2, 2004, and he had the worst average in the league (.147) with one home run and four RBIs since Aug. 24. Yet Burrell remained in the lineup Wednesday night, batting behind 1B Ryan Howard against Braves RHP Jair Jurrjens, even though lefty-swinging OFs Geoff Jenkins and Matt Stairs were available to play. Burrell finished 1-for-4. "I thought about resting him," manager Charlie Manuel said. "But also we've won five in a row. He helped us win the games Sunday. He's been there. We'll see how he's going."

--RF Jayson Werth continued his torrid pace. Werth went 2-for-4 Wednesday night against the Braves and is batting .337 (29-for-86) with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 24 games since taking over as the full-time right fielder Aug. 22 when Geoff Jenkins suffered a strained right hip flexor. For the season, Werth is batting .283 with 23 homers, 64 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 19 chances. He also extended his career-high hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fourth inning Wednesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Times during Charlie Manuel's four-year tenure as Phillies manager that the team has scored a run via sacrifice bunt or a bunt single. Both times, C Carlos Ruiz has dropped a sacrifice bunt. Ruiz pulled off the squeeze play May 12, 2007, and again on Sept. 11.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We'll get (the umpires) a lot of cheesesteaks. Make sure we keep them happy." -- Manager Charlie Manuel, upon learning that the Phillies won all four coin tosses to assure any possible tie-breaker games against the Mets, Brewers, Astros or Cardinals for the right to advance to the playoffs will be played at Citizens Bank Park.
