Philadelphia Phillies Notes, Quotes 2008-09-22
--RHP Clay Condrey doesn't usually pitch in high-stress, late-inning situations. But Phillies manager Charlie Manuel already had used RHP Chad Durbin and LHP J.C. Romero. RHP Ryan Madson had thrown 25 pitches (and recorded three enormously important outs) in the eighth inning Saturday night, so Manuel didn't want to use him until the eighth. Thus, with the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh inning Sunday, he called on Condrey, who went to a 2-0 count before getting Florida's Cody Ross to ground into an inning-ending double play. "For me, I still hope I'm coming to a big-league ballpark every day and nobody's touching me on my back and telling me I'm going somewhere else," said Condrey, a journeyman reliever. "The important thing was that we got a win, and we ended up gaining a game on the Mets. It ended up working out for us."

--3B Greg Dobbs' right calf cramped up in the seventh inning Sunday, and manager Charlie Manuel considered putting replacement 3B Pedro Feliz into the No. 9 spot in the Phillies' lineup. Instead, he opted for a conventional, straight-up switch. And when Feliz came to the plate with a runner on first base in the eighth, Manuel thought about flashing a bunt sign. At the last moment, though, he told third base coach Steve Smith to let Feliz swing away. Two pitchers later, Feliz homered. "Lucky hit," Feliz said.

--2B Chase Utley continues to plead ignorance over speculation -- and even GM Pat Gillick's admission -- that an injured hip has sapped him of his power. But over the past 28 games, Utley has only six extra-base hits and 14 RBIs, and in the third inning Sunday, he hit his first home run in 101 at-bats. "It proves it's still there," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He can still do it."

--LHP Jamie Moyer earned his team-leading 15th victory -- and the 245th of his career -- by allowing one run in six innings. Moyer was 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA against the Marlins this season and is 11-1 in his career against Florida.

--RHP Ryan Madson has become the Phillies' bridge to closer Brad Lidge. Madson seemingly has emerged as manager Charlie Manuel's preferred right-handed pitcher in the eighth inning. After pitching out of a two-on, none-out jam in the eighth Saturday night, he tossed a spotless eighth Sunday, stretching his scoreless streak to 11 2/3 innings.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- Victories for the Phillies in their first nine games this season at Turner Field. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Phillies are the first team to win nine consecutive road games in Atlanta in a single season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "How can you really argue with the guy for not playing you? You don't really have much bargaining power." -- Phillies LF Pat Burrell, who went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts Sept. 16 in Atlanta and said he wouldn't have argued if manager Charlie Manuel had decided to bench him the following night. (Manuel didn't.)
