Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-09-07

Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-09-07--2B Chase Utley was back in the lineup after missing Saturday night's game with a bruised and badly swollen right foot. He went 1-for-4. Utley was injured when he fouled a ball off his foot Friday night. It was the second time this season that Utley has bruised his right foot. He was hit by a pitch May 1 by Mets RHP Mike Pelfrey and missed a game four days later.

--C Carlos Ruiz has hit safely in eight consecutive games and 10 of his last 11, a hot streak that has raised his average from .225 to .254. For the past two seasons, manager Charlie Manuel and hitting coach Milt Thompson have been trying to get right-handed Ruiz to hit the ball to right field and right-center, and when he's going well, that's usually the reason. "He's still pulled some balls, but he's hit the ball to right field good," Manuel said. "That's good." But Manuel believes Ruiz can be even better. Known mostly for his defense behind the plate, Manuel is expecting him to be a better run-producer for the bottom of the lineup. "What's he got, 35 RBIs?" Manuel said. "I think he could do better than that. I think 'Chooch' can hit .260, maybe even .270, and he can hit 15 home runs."

MEDICAL WATCH:

2B Chase Utley (bruised right foot) did not play Sept. 5 but returned to the lineup on Sept. 6.

RHP Clay Condrey (strained left oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 23. He began a minor league rehab assignment Aug. 31, but he suffered a setback in early September, delaying his recovery.

INF/OF Greg Dobbs (strained left calf) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 22.

LHP J.C. Romero (left forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 20. He experienced soreness Aug. 7 during his first rehab appearance for Class A Clearwater, and he was shut down for 10 days. He is expected to throw a simulated game in early September, and he could return in late September.

RHP John Ennis (right elbow surgery in April 2009) was called up from the minors and placed on the 60-day disabled list Aug. 31.
