Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-04-07

Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-04-07
There were few roster spots up for grabs this spring, but the Phillies did answer several health-related questions. Both 2B Chase Utley and 3B Pedro Feliz proved they're ready to open the season on time after having offseason surgeries, and ace Cole Hamels overcame lingering tightness in his elbow.

PLAYER NOTES:

--LHP Jamie Moyer led the Phillies with 16 wins last season, and he'll try to lead them to their first victory of 2009. Moyer will start Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park against the Atlanta Braves. At 46, he's the oldest player in the majors, but he has shown no signs of slowing down, logging 196 1/3 innings last season and becoming the fourth pitcher in the modern era to win 10 games in a season at the age of 45 (the others were Phil Niekro, 1984-86; Satchel Paige, 1952; Jack Quinn, 1929). Pitching coach Rich Dubee said he believes Moyer can pitch until he's 50.

--SS Jimmy Rollins wasn't concerned after the Phillies lost their season opener Sunday night, 4-1 against the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. In fact, he even made light of the defeat. "My goodness," Rollins said. "I am so heartbroken that we lost a game." But Rollins is hoping the Phillies can salvage a series victory by winning the next two games against Atlanta. In particular, he's targeting Wednesday's game, when the Phillies will receive their World Series rings in a pregame ceremony. Former LF Pat Burrell is expected to attend the ceremony. OF Geoff Jenkins, released during the final week of spring training, also has been invited. "That's the one we definitely want to win, no question about that," Rollins said.

--RHP Brett Myers allowed four runs in the first two innings before settling down Sunday night. And while he made mistakes that led to home runs by Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur and Jordan Schafer, Myers' biggest problem may have been his pitch selection. Of the 91 pitches he threw (not including an intentional walk of Schafer in the sixth inning), 34 were fastballs, 12 were changeups, 28 were a slider/cutter hybrid and only 17 were curveballs. Of those 17, 12 were thrown for strikes. But Myers didn't throw a curveball until late in the second inning. "It's something that Brett can learn from," SS Jimmy Rollins said. "He didn't throw his curveball until later in the game, and that's a weapon for him. Maybe he'll start throwing it a little earlier in the game, just to get guys off his fastball and off his cutter and give them a different look or just a wrinkle."
