Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - There were few roster spots up for grabs this spring, but the Phillies did answer several health-related questions. Both 2B Chase Utley and 3B Pedro Feliz proved they're ready to open the season on time after having offseason surgeries, and ace Cole Hamels overcame lingering tightness in his elbow.
PLAYER NEWS: --LF Raul Ibanez signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract and replaced popular Pat Burrell, who returned to Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday to receive his World Series ring. Burrell, who rode at the head of the Phillies' championship parade in October, received a boisterous ovation and waved to the crowd. But Ibanez had a big day, too. He went 2-for-3 with his first home run with the Phillies and three RBIs.
"I can't control how people feel about me positively or not," Ibanez said. "You certainly hope people feel positively toward you, but since I can't control that, I just focus on the things I can control."
--RHP Clay Condrey didn't give it any thought at the time. By striking out Kelly Johnson to leave the bases loaded in the seventh inning Wednesday, all he seemingly did was prevent a seven-run deficit from getting any worse. But maybe Condrey started a rally. Any number of factors contributed to the eight-run seventh inning that turned a potential season-opening series sweep by the Atlanta Braves into an improbable 12-11 Phillies win.
There were the RBI singles by Raul Ibanez, Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino, and of course, there were the four bases-loaded walks that forced in runs. And then there was Condrey, who threw four pitches, three strikes. It often is said that no deficit is too great for the Phillies' relentless offense, especially in their hitter-friendly park. But it surely helped that Condrey wiggled free from a bases-loaded jam created by fellow RHP Chad Durbin in the previous half-inning.
"I didn't think about it until you started talking about it," Condrey said. "But now, you look at it, say they get a base hit and get a run or two, now it's 12-3, not 10-3."
--RHP Kyle Kendrick, assigned to Class AAA Lehigh Valley last month after spending the past two seasons with the Phillies, attended the World Series ring ceremony Wednesday. Kendrick is scheduled to start Lehigh Valley's season opener Thursday against Scranton. He'll be opposed by New York Yankees prospect Phil Hughes.
"I told the (Lehigh Valley) guys I'll show them my ring Friday," Kendrick said. "They wanted to see it (Thursday), but I told them, 'No, I'm pitching.'"
Kendrick won 21 games for the Phillies in 2007 and 2008 but was beaten out by RHP Chan Ho Park and LHP J.A. Happ in the spring training competition to be the Phillies' No. 5 starter.
MEDICAL WATCH:
LHP Cole Hamels (left elbow stiffness) received an anti-inflammatory injection March 17. He is expected to be ready for the regular season's fourth game, April 10.
LHP Mike Zagurski (Tommy John elbow surgery in April 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He resumed pitching in late March and could be ready to join the team by mid-April.
