Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - There were few roster spots up for grabs this spring, but the Phillies did answer several health-related questions. Both 2B Chase Utley and 3B Pedro Feliz proved they were ready to open the season on time after having offseason surgeries, and LHP Cole Hamels overcame lingering tightness in his elbow.
PLAYER NEWS: --RHP Chad Durbin notched a two-out single in the fifth inning, only his second hit in 16 career at-bats. He also tossed a scoreless inning after yielding four runs in two innings to open the season. Pitching coach Rich Dubee attributed the improvement to better mechanics. "His delivery was quiet, his head was quiet, and he had a much better path to home plate," Dubee said. "It was less violent."
--C Carlos Ruiz awoke Saturday and the strained right oblique (rib cage) muscle didn't feel appreciably better than it did Friday night. So, the Phillies put Ruiz on the disabled list and recalled 22-year-old C Lou Marson from Class AAA Lehigh Valley. Ruiz is eligible to be activated April 26, but he isn't going to be rushed. The Phillies have had success with oblique strains (RF Jayson Werth missed only two weeks last season), but the injury has a tendency to linger if it isn't given ample time to heal. "It's early in the season, and we have a lot of games (left)," Ruiz said. "I want to be on the field. I don't want to be on the DL. But it happened. I just hope I can come back very soon."
--C Chris Coste said last season that his unorthodox swing may stay more consistent if he starts only two or three games per week. He figures to get more than that with C Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique (rib cage) muscle. Coste also got only 35 Grapefruit League at-bats because of a tight hamstring, and manager Charlie Manuel has expressed concern that Coste may not be ready to play regularly. "I'm used to starting out seasons not getting a ton of at-bats right away, so even if I would've gotten three of four at-bats every day in the spring, it's kind of the same thing every year," Coste said. "I actually feel real good out there. Hitting is such a confidence issue. Once the regular season starts, your instinct kicks in. It's not something I'm concerned about."
MEDICAL WATCH:
C Carlos Ruiz (strained right oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. The Phillies won't rush him back.
LHP Mike Zagurski (Tommy John elbow surgery in April 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He resumed pitching in late March and could be ready to join the team by mid-April.
