Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-04-22

Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-04-22
The shift was subtle until it became glaringly obvious. Once expected to slug their way to the playoffs, the Phillies quietly transformed last summer into a pitching- and defense-oriented team. Then, in October, they won the World Series with shutdown pitching, getting solid postseason outings from each member of the rotation. And with four starters returning, pitching figured to be a major strength in 2009. But through April 19, the Phillies had allowed 26 home runs in 11 games. The starters had yielded 18. "It's definitely location," manager Charlie Manuel said. "If you're going to throw high changeups, well, there's a good chance that you're going to give up a lot of home runs. The changeup can be a tremendous pitch, and a lot of our pitchers throw it. But it's also a ball you have to throw down in the strike zone. You just cannot throw belt-high changeups and expect to get away with it."

PLAYER NEWS:

--C Carlos Ruiz (strained right oblique) hit off a tee Tuesday for the third consecutive day and caught in the bullpen. Barring any setbacks, he could begin a minor league assignment this weekend and may be activated Monday. That's good news for a Phillies pitching staff that likes having Ruiz behind the plate. But manager Charlie Manuel doesn't think Ruiz's absence (he has been sidelined since April 10) has contributed to the Phils' early-season pitching struggles. Through Tuesday night, the Phillies have a 6.62 ERA, worst in the National League. "I'd like to think that shouldn't have anything to do with it," Manuel said. "I think (Chris) Coste and (Lou) Marson can handle that just as good as Chooch."

--3B Pedro Feliz admits he put pressure on himself to perform last season, his first with the Phillies. The result: He batted only .249 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs. This season, he's more relaxed, and it shows. Feliz picked up three hits -- including a two-out, solo home run in the third inning -- Tuesday night to raise his average to .359 (14-for-39). "When he's consistent and when he gets in a period where he's really swinging good, he's a good-looking hitter, like I've always said," manager Charlie Manuel said.

--2B Chase Utley singled and drew three walks Tuesday night and has reached base safely in 32 straight games. It's the longest current on-base streak in the majors and the Phillies' longest on-base streak since Utley's 35-game streak in 2006. Utley also has scored a run in each of his last eight games. Utley is batting .372 with a .491 on-base percentage through 12 games.

--LHP Mike Zagurski, working his way back from Tommy John surgery performed last April, made his second rehab appearance Tuesday. He tossed a scoreless inning for Class A Clearwater, matching his outing from Friday.

MEDICAL WATCH:

C Carlos Ruiz (strained right oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. He could begin a rehab assignment during the weekend of April 24-26, and he might be activated April 27.
