Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-04-24
The shift was subtle until it became glaringly obvious. Once expected to slug their way to the playoffs, the Phillies quietly transformed last summer into a pitching- and defense-oriented team. Then, in October, they won the World Series with shutdown pitching, getting solid postseason outings from each member of the rotation. And with four starters returning, pitching figured to be a major strength in 2009. But through April 19, the Phillies had allowed 26 home runs in 11 games. The starters had yielded 18. "It's definitely location," manager Charlie Manuel said. "If you're going to throw high changeups, well, there's a good chance that you're going to give up a lot of home runs. The changeup can be a tremendous pitch, and a lot of our pitchers throw it. But it's also a ball you have to throw down in the strike zone. You just cannot throw belt-high changeups and expect to get away with it."

PLAYER NEWS:

--C Carlos Ruiz, who has been sidelined since April 10 with a strained right oblique, will begin a rehabilitation assignment Saturday at Class AAA Lehigh Valley. Ruiz is eligible to be activated Sunday, although it's more likely he'll rejoin the Phillies on Tuesday or Wednesday. Manager Charlie Manuel indicated Ruiz may play four minor league games, alternating starts at catcher and designated hitter. Ruiz has been hitting, throwing and catching this week without aggravating the strained muscle near his ribcage. When he returns, the Phillies intend to send rookie C Lou Marson back to Class AAA Lehigh Valley.

--2B Chase Utley went 0-for-4 and left three runners on base in a 6-1 loss to the Brewers, ending his streak of reaching base in 33 consecutive games. Utley's was the longest active on-base streak in the majors and the longest by a Phillies player since Utley reached in 35 straight games in 2006. OF Bobby Abreu holds the Phillies record with a 48-game on-base streak, set over the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

--LF Raul Ibanez went 0-for-3 with a walk in a 6-1 loss to the Brewers, snapping his hitting streak at nine games. But Ibanez has had a strong start for the Phillies, batting .345 through 14 games. The Phillies signed Ibanez to a three-year, $31.5 million contract during the offseason, a more lucrative deal than most free agent outfielders. Pat Burrell, for example, signed for two years and $16 million with the Rays, while Milton Bradley signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Cubs. The Cubs and New York Mets were believed to be interested in Ibanez. "If we had waited, we would've lost (Ibanez) to a deal that was much higher than what we paid," GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told the Phillies' Web site. "I had strong indications that there were a lot of teams that were very interested in him. Any time you get more than two teams interested in a player, it has a tendency to escalate."

--LHP Mike Zagurski has been activated from the disabled list and optioned to Class A Clearwater. Zagurski is recovering from Tommy John ligament-reconstruction surgery on April 3, 2008. He had made two rehab appearances for Clearwater and tossed two scoreless innings. Zagurski, 26, went 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA in 25 appearances for the Phillies in 2007 before suffering a hamstring injury that required surgery. During his rehab from that injury, he injured his elbow and required the surgery.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Cole Hamels (bruised left shoulder) left the April 23 game, but he doesn't expect to miss a start.

C Carlos Ruiz (strained right oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. He will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Lehigh Valley on April 25, and he could return to the Phillies after a few games in the minors.
