Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-04-28
Chan Ho Park was angry with himself for serving up back-to-back home runs on back-to-back pitches in the fourth inning Saturday night. But he knew if he could keep the deficit from growing, the Phillies had a chance. "When I got out of the game, I believed we were going to come back," Park said. "We always do." It does seem that way, doesn't it? Through Sunday, the Phillies had scored 40 of their 85 runs after the seventh inning. They had eight come-from-behind victories and were 5-6 when trailing after six innings, 4-6 when trailing after seven and 3-7 when trailing after eight. "I don't have an answer for that," manager Charlie Manuel said of the Phils' uncanny comeback ability. "Scoring late, that's not a bad way to play if you score enough. We don't want to play like that every night, but right now, that seems to be what's happening."

--RHP Joe Blanton allowed eight hits and six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings Monday night in the series opener against the Washington Nationals, and like most Phillies pitchers this season, he was victimized by home runs. Ryan Zimmerman belted two homers against Blanton, who also gave up a homer to Elijah Dukes. "Where do we start?" Blanton said of his performance. "I was terrible. I pretty much stunk. I was missing my spots and getting too much of the plate. It was probably the worst start I've had here." Blanton is 0-2 with an 8.41 ERA in four starts this season.

--C Carlos Ruiz was scratched from the lineup for Class AAA Lehigh Valley on Monday night. Ruiz, who was expected to play in his third game of a rehabilitation assignment, felt discomfort in his strained right oblique during batting practice. He will be re-evaluated Tuesday. Ruiz was expected to catch Tuesday night for Class AA Reading and rejoin the Phillies before Wednesday night's game against the Washington Nationals. His exact return now is unclear. Ruiz went on the disabled list April 11 after straining his right oblique (rib cage) muscle the previous day during a game at Coors Field. In his absence, C Lou Marson has been splitting time with Chris Coste.

--3B Greg Dobbs made his first start of the season Monday night in the series opener against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. 3B Pedro Feliz had started the season's first 17 games and has been swinging the ball well, but manager Charlie Manuel had been looking for a chance to give Dobbs a start. Manuel said Dobbs, a pinch-hitting specialist, needs more at-bats to be successful, even in his bench role. Entering Monday night, Dobbs was 1-for-12. Last season, he had 226 at-bats in 126 games, including 42 starts. "You can't go all year and get him so few at-bats," Manuel said. "If he does that, it won't help him out as much as we need."

RHP Brad Lidge (inflamed right knee) did not pitch April 26 or 27 and is day-to-day.

LHP Cole Hamels (bruised left shoulder) left the April 23 game, but he doesn't expect to miss a start.

C Carlos Ruiz (strained right oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Lehigh Valley on April 25 but had a setback April 27.
