Philadelphia Phillies Roster Report 2009-05-16
--LHP J.A. Happ had been scheduled to make a spot start Saturday night in the second half of a day-night doubleheader against the Washington Nationals, but he was needed to pitch in the 11th inning Friday night. So, the Phillies called up RHP Andrew Carpenter from Class AAA Lehigh Valley to make the start and designated seldom-used INF Miguel Cairo for assignment. Carpenter, who turns 24 on Monday, is 1-0 with a 4.72 ERA for Class AAA Lehigh Valley. He has allowed 31 hits and walked 15 in 34 innings. Last season, Carpenter made one relief appearance for the Phillies and allowed one hit in a scoreless inning. Cairo, who signed a minor-league contract in February but made the Phillies' roster in spring training, was 2-for-17 (.118) and made only one start.

--RHP Brad Lidge continues to struggle for the Phillies. After going 48-for-48 in save chances last season (including the playoffs), Lidge blew his second save and allowed runs in his sixth consecutive appearance Friday night against the Washington Nationals. With the Phillies leading 6-4 in the ninth inning, Lidge walked Nick Johnson and yielded a single to Ryan Zimmerman and a two-run double to Willie Harris, allowing the Nationals to tie the game. Lidge has given up nine runs in his last six innings, leaving his overall ERA at 9.19.

--C Carlos Ruiz made an adjustment at the plate earlier this week, and while the Phillies don't want to divulge what it is (manager Charlie Manuel said he doesn't want to tip off opposing teams), it's certainly working. Including his 3-for-6 performance in Friday night's 10-6 victory over the Nationals, Ruiz is 7-for-10 in his last three games and has reached base in 11 of 14 plate appearances (seven hits, four walks). Prior to his mini-hot streak, Ruiz was only 5-for-31 for the season. The torrid stretch has hiked his average to .293 from .161.

The Phillies are healthy.
