Phillies Notes: Rollins given a second day off
MIAMI - Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was given his second day off of the season yesterday as he fights to escape his early-season batting woes.

quot;I don't see it as a day off,quot; said Rollins, who also didn't start last Sunday against San Diego. quot;I see it as a start off.quot;

Rollins was not needed in a 13-2 rout of the Florida Marlins.

In 16 games, he is hitting .162 (11 for 68) with seven runs, two doubles, a homer, and five RBIs. He has no stolen bases and a .205 on-base percentage.

quot;Jimmy isn't swinging good,quot; manager Charlie Manuel said. quot;He doesn't have his timing. It is feel, comfort and confidence.

quot;He is going to be all right. Over 162 games, everybody goes bad. A couple of good nights and he will be right back up there.quot;

In Friday's seven-run rally in the ninth against Florida, Rollins walked and scored on Shane Victorino's grand slam. On Saturday, he singled and scored in the sixth.

quot;To start a rally with a walk or hit, score a run, or do something to help makes you feel good, but not better,quot; Rollins said. quot;It is only one game.quot;

The Marlins were the perfect team for Rollins to break out against. Since Florida's inception in 1993, Rollins has more triples (12) and stolen bases (40) against them than any other player.

quot;I'm just trying to put the ball on the barrel of the bat,quot; Rollins said, quot;and have it find the grass instead of somebody's glove.

quot;On-base percentage is what counts when you're going bad. I need two or three good games in a row to find a rhythm and be on my way.quot;

Outfielder on the mound Trailing by 13-1 in the ninth inning, the Marlins pitched lefthanded outfielder Cody Ross to save their pitchers.

He retired Ryan Howard on a fly ball to right, yielded an infield hit to Jayson Werth , then retired Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz on fly balls.

quot;We were watching him in the bullpen,quot; Howard said, quot;to see what he had. We had nothing on him, but he kept the ball around the plate.quot;

Before Howard flied out, he fouled a pitch down the left-field line that the Marlins lost in the sun.

quot;When [Howard] was walking back to the plate, I told him, 'That was a knuckle curve. Pretty good, huh?' quot; Ross said. quot;He said, 'Yeah, it was.' quot;

South Jersey ties Marlins lefthander Dan Meyer got a lot of phone calls and text messages after he pitched a hitless eighth inning vs. the Phils on Saturday.

quot;A lot of friends were watching the game,quot; said the Woodbury native, quot;and they are big Phillies fans.quot;

Meyer, a graduate of Kingsway Regional High, pulled for Lenny Dykstra, John Kruk and Darren Daulton in the 1993 World Series against Toronto.

quot;I was 12 years old,quot; Meyer said. quot;I wasn't a die-hard fan. I rooted for them because they were the hometown team.quot;

A bit of history The last time the Phillies won two straight road games in which they trailed entering the ninth, as they did Friday and Saturday, was Sept. 21-22, 1957, at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. That was the Phillies' final visit to the ballpark before the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles.
