Phillies slam the Nationals in grand style

Phillies slam the Nationals in grand style
It's only April and the Phillies already have the drama thing down pat.

After the pitching staff gave up five home runs, which accounted for eight of Washington's 11 runs, the Phillies , particularly Raul Ibanez, made it all not seem so bad.

The left fielder highlighted their six-run eighth inning with a two-out grand slam to right field, giving his team a 13-11 win over the Nationals on Monday at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies have now come from behind in nine of their 10 wins.

"I can't remember ever being a part of a team that can do that [that often]," Ibanez said. "I don't even know that I've played against teams that can come back late like this."

The Phillies , too, got eight runs off long balls. Ryan Howard connected for his sixth career grand slam in the fifth inning, putting him just one behind franchise leader Mike Schmidt. Ibanez and Howard became the fourth duo in club history to hit two grand slams in one game -- the last was Tomas Perez and Jason Michaels on Sept. 9, 2003.

"Good ol' fashioned slugfest," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of the seven home runs.

With the game tied at seven, Scott Eyre became the latest home run victim. The reliever allowed four runs via two home runs without retiring a batter in the eighth, which put the Nationals ahead 11-7.

The Phillies never looked fazed, though, even after Lou Marson struck out to lead off the eighth. With Pedro Feliz and Jimmy Rollins both in scoring position after getting hits, Shane Victorino hit a sacrifice fly to make it 11-8. Chase Utley's single down the right-field line made it a two-run game. Then Howard and Werth walked to load the bases for Ibanez, who connected for his eighth career salami and his sixth home run of the season.

Ibanez didn't let himself think about putting the Phillies ahead.

"I know I have the bases loaded and that he throws very hard and I wanted [my swing] to be short and quick and not try to do too much," he said. "Less is more sometimes."

This time, though, more gave the Phillies the win and put them two games above .500, a place they haven't been yet this year.

"My take on this club is it's a really resilient club, a club that never gives in," Ibanez said. "This team plays 27 outs and it's amazing to be a part of it. I don't really have a word to describe what it's really like to play with this group of guys."

The Phillies pitching staff has some work to do, and, at least for a couple days, it will be without Brad Lidge.

The closer has inflammation in his right knee and is listed as day-to-day. An MRI last week revealed no structural damage, but because he has some discomfort, the club isn't taking any chances. Lidge, on anti-inflammatories, said he started to feel some pain in the first week of the season in Colorado and it's only gotten worse.

"Pushing off does [aggravate it], especially if I get down too much on my back leg," said Lidge, who has had a cartilage transplant and meniscus repaired in that knee. "That being said, I need to be very careful with my mechanics so I don't reaggravate it each time I go back out."

After posting a 2.89 ERA in the series sweep of the National League East leading Marlins over the weekend, the staff took several steps back on Monday.

The Phillies allowed 11 earned runs on 12 hits and 10 walks. Blanton went 41/3, allowing six runs on eight hits, including three homers.

"I'm concerned about our pitching, yes," Manuel said.

Blanton said nothing was working for him.

"That was probably the worst control I've ever had," he said. "I was missing up a lot. I was missing down the middle a lot.
