Phillieshome.com | Philadelphia Phillies News, phillies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Good pinch-hitters are of great value to National League teams.
Knowing they have one of the best, the Phillies yesterday signed Greg Dobbs to a two-year deal worth $2.5 million. "I'm ecstatic about this," Dobbs said by telephone from California. "When you're part of something special like we have going with the Phillies, you want to be part of it for as long as possible. This allows me to be here for at least the next two years. I can't wait to get to spring training and try to win another World Series."
Dobbs, 30, had been eligible for salary arbitration. With him off the board, the Phils are down to seven arbitration-eligible players: Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, Chad Durbin and Joe Blanton.
The club and the players will exchange potential salary figures on Tuesday.
According to FoxSports.com, Madson turned down a three-year, $12 million offer from the Phils. The righthanded reliever was 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 76 appearances last season.
Dobbs came to the Phillies in January 2007, after being waived by Seattle. The lefthanded hitter proved to be an excellent pickup, batting .272 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs in 324 at-bats. As a pinch-hitter in 2007, he drove in 18 runs, a major-league best.
In 2008, Dobbs hit .301 with nine homers and 40 RBIs in 226 at-bats. He led the majors with 22 pinch hits (a Phillies record) while driving in 16 runs in the role.
"Coming to Philadelphia has been a tremendous experience for me and my family," Dobbs said. "I was kind of left for dead in Seattle. Pat Gillick, Ruben Amaro and the rest of the Phillies organization went out on a limb and allowed me to resurrect my career."
