Phils sign utilityman Cairo to minor league deal
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Utilityman Miguel Cairo signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday and will get a chance to earn a roster spot in spring training.

Cairo is a career .266 hitter in 13 seasons. He spent last year with the Seattle Mariners, hitting .249 with 23 RBIs in 221 at-bats.

Primarily a second baseman in the past, Cairo mostly played first base last year. He saw action at every infield position and the outfield.

Cairo will compete with former All-Star second baseman Marcus Giles and prospect Jason Donald for a possible spot on the team. If All-Star second baseman Chase Utley is ready to play the season opener after offseason hip surgery, the Phillies might not take the extra infielder.

Cairo batted .298 in 465 at-bats with Tampa Bay in 1999 and hit .292 in 360 at-bats with the New York Yankees in 2004. He has 27 homers and 318 RBIs with a .315 on-base percentage in his career. Cairo has played for seven teams, including Toronto, the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis and the New York Mets.
